Recently, many people have been wondering about the connection between alcohol consumption and its adverse effects on vision. Does alcohol really worsen eyesight? What substances also have negative impacts on our sense of sight? Dr. Aryani Vindhya Putri, Sp.M, a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), has addressed this issue.

To answer this question, Aryani provided general education regarding sudden vision loss. As a general overview, eye diseases can be caused by many factors, such as eye infections, trauma from injury, consumption of certain substances, or nerve disturbances in the optic nerve.

Symptoms experienced by patients with sudden vision loss are usually accompanied by red or non-red eyes, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, eye pain, or sudden whitening of vision. In addition, a comprehensive examination is necessary, including a medical history, brain CT scans, laboratory tests, and so on.

More specifically, if this is caused by the consumption of certain substances, the treatment and symptoms experienced by the patient will be different. For example, individuals who consume alcohol may have different symptoms or experience different effects. Alcohol contains both methanol and ethanol, and if consumed over a long period and in large amounts, it can accumulate and cause disorders such as eye disturbances. Especially in adulterated alcohol, which usually contains methanol, which is more toxic. Moreover, if the alcohol content is not accurately known, it can worsen the effects experienced by the patient.

"The most fatal effect of consuming alcohol is when methanol attacks our optic nerves. This can lead to papilledema or swelling of the optic nerve and can be difficult to return to normal and even life-threatening," she added.

If it reaches this stage, restoring vision one hundred percent depends on the patient's condition, the amount of substance consumed, how long the substance has been consumed, and the patient's own condition or reaction. Therefore, if there is advanced damage to the optic nerve, the treatment involves maintaining the remaining vision, such as providing vitamins and other necessary medications.

If it is still in the early stages, treatment may involve dialysis or regular medication. Meanwhile, if it is caused by cloudiness or opacity, the treatment is cleansing through surgery.

For this reason, the ophthalmologist recommends that the public avoid consuming harmful substances such as alcohol. Not only that, but other substances such as medication taken regularly for certain diseases, drugs, or even tobacco can also be the precursor to eye swelling diseases.

Aryani's advice is to always routinely check your eyes. Especially for patients with a history of other diseases such as hypertension or tuberculosis. They are required to take medication regularly to treat the disease. Therefore, Aryani explains that it is mandatory for them to have routine eye checks. (tri/wil/fajr)
