Fasting is not only about controlling the desire for thirst and hunger, but it is also related to a person's physical and mental health. Besides being beneficial for physical health, fasting also has benefits for mental health. Dr. Zainul Anwar, S.Psi., M.Psi., a lecturer in the Psychology study program at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), explained several benefits of fasting for mental health.

First, fasting makes emotions more stable. People who fast are accustomed to managing emotions, both biological and psychological. So, when fasting, emotions will be more controlled and stable. Second, having more empathy. When fasting, we are actually taught to empathize. By empathizing, our mental state will develop more positively and healthily.

"Because of helping or assisting others, it will automatically make our psyche more enthusiastic," he said.

Third, fasting makes the mind healthier, especially related to various pressures in life. For example, stress. Stress can be easier to manage with fasting. There are prohibitions that we should avoid when fasting. For example, gossiping, which psychologically can cause stress. By fasting, we should try to avoid such things as much as possible, which also helps us avoid stress. Fourth, fasting can make us more productive. Fifth, fasting can make life more organized.

There are no negative effects on mental health caused by fasting. However, fasting must be taken seriously. If we only fast to fulfil obligations, we will complain more. For example, complain about biological things like hunger and thirst. Then, make fasting an excuse to be lazy.

"Actually, when fasting, we should become more productive and enthusiastic. Of course, in positive matters," he explained.

If we see fasting as a burden, it might make us more stressed. However, if we follow the fasting rules, it will not have any negative effects psychologically. When feeling stressed while fasting, try to change our mindset.

"Try to fast with a more relaxed and happy feeling. Ramadan fasting is only once a year, so welcome and carry out the command of the Almighty with sincerity. God willing, there will be beautiful impacts and rewards for us during or after performing it," he concluded. (*)
