Homecoming in fact has long been carried out by most Indonesian people. Especially when it comes to Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Although the routine was banned in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, the government has now allowed it. Providing concessions for the community to allow going home to their hometowns.

UMM Sociology Lecturer, Mochamad Aan Sugiharto, M.Sosio, explained that this homecoming phenomenon emerged along with the urbanization process of Indonesian society. A large number of people of productive age who are studying or working in big cities make the Eid holiday a golden opportunity. In this case the opportunity to gather with family.

"Actually, there is no definite data on when this homecoming phenomenon first appeared. However, considering the fact that going home is a condition of temporary migration of people from cities to villages, the hypothesis is that going home begins to appear along with the many processes of urbanization," explained the head of the Sociology Laboratory.

Not only to strengthen the relationship, Aan as he is familiarly called, said that going home also serves to re-glue emotional relationships between individuals. In sociology, this is important because the relationship between individuals can strengthen solidarity.

“Solidarity of society is generally divided into two, namely mechanical and organic. The people of the city belong to organic solidarity. The interactions that are built-in in everyday life tend to be out of necessity. Meanwhile, the people of the village golong in mechanical solidarity. The interaction of this solidarity is a daily routine that tends to be familial. However, nowadays many urban people want to apply the concept of kinship in every interaction. Therefore, going home can strengthen the concept," he said.

Apart from the positive impacts, going home also brings some negative impacts. Homecoming is always synonymous with long, long, and tiring trips that occur due to traffic congestion. Massive mobilization of people using private vehicles ahead of the holiday has caused a new problem, namely congestion.

“There are at least three main reasons why Indonesians do not use public transportation. First, the connectivity of public transport infrastructure does not reach remote villages. The station or terminal is always located in a city far from the home of the travelers. Second, the limitations of tickets and departure times, where the majority of travelers are workers or employees whose vacation time is usually close to the D day. Meanwhile, tickets are usually available long before or after the D day, “explained Aan.

Lastly, the self-actualization factor. According to Aan, travelers usually tend to want to tell their family and neighbors that they have succeeded in trying their luck in the city. One of them is by going home and bringing a personal vehicle or a symbol that shows their success. (syi/wil)
