The Mechanical Engineering Study Program, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), again held an exhibition of works from students and lecturers entitled Mechanical Engineering Expo (Mexpo). The Wednesday (10/8) schedule showcased the work of students, especially those who have helped dozens of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) in Malang Raya with the output of making machine works.

Iis Siti Aisyah, ST., MT. Ph.D., as the chief executive of Mexpo said that this plan was the second year the Mexpo was held. The purpose of this program is to showcase the exciting works of UMM Mechanical Engineering students. In addition, it is also a fulfillment of international accreditation requirements that are being prepared.

"Through this program, visitors and the public can see a series of tools that draw ideas from students. Of course, all of these tools are designed and made by going through various courses," she added.

Iis, as she is familiarly called, explained that before holding the Mexpo exhibition, they had sent the students to 60 MSMEs spread across Malang Raya. Each MSME is asked to explore and find the problems that business actors are experiencing. Then provide and offer innovative solutions in the form of machine work.

"Through the project design team course, we invite students to provide the best solutions from their acquired lectures. This course is mandatory for all UMM mechanical engineering students to produce mechanical work," she said.

One of the flagship works of this Mexpo exhibition is automatic coffee roasting. Students found that one of the MSMEs felt that it did not evenly distribute roasted coffee beans. It can even burn and harm. Based on this, students design machines so that they roast evenly and reap maximum results.

In addition to products from courses, some products exhibited at Mexpo are the results of the Student Creativity Week (PKM). Even with various research and competitions followed by the academic community of the Mechanical Engineering Study Program. One of them is Robot Dome, which won 2nd place in the 2022 Indonesian Robot Contest last month.

Uniquely, in this second mexpo event, everything was designed entirely by students and alumni who worked together to make the event more lively. Also present were MSME actors and hundreds of visitors from high school and vocational high school students throughout Malang Raya.

"I hope that Mexpo can become an annual event. If this year invites MSMEs, I hope that in the future, it can reach broader targets and be a suitable means of communication between alumni and students, "she concluded.

In line with Iis, Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Sc. as Deputy Chancellor I of UMM, assessed that a program strengthened internalization between students, lecturers, and alumni. Mainly to get recognition internationally. This achievement did not escape from UMM who was trusted by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education through the Mechanical Engineering Study Program to run the Independent Campus Competition Program (PKKM)

"I hope that lecturers and students can compete not only at the regional level but also at the international level. And the Faculty of Engineering at UMM managed to show its ability. In several competitions, they even won the robot competition and other competitions. This shows that lecturers and engineering students have an ethos to compete at various levels," he said.
