UMM Cultural Institute Teaches Writing to Residents of Malang Women's Prison

The Cultural Institute (LK) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) empowered residents of class IIA Malang female prisons through writing skills last Tuesday (9/8). Located in women's prison, LK UMM explained easy steps to write stories, use language, and tips to produce interesting works.

Tri Anna Aryati, Bc. IP, SH., M.Sc. as the head of the Class II Malang Women's Prison, he was happy with the arrival of a group from UMM. According to him, this is a strategic opportunity for prison inmates to explore their potential and sharpen their writing skills. Especially with a series of experts who have been presented and are ready to provide good writing tips.

“If it is outside, perhaps the presenters will be given a fee in return for the material. However, the fathers and mothers came here with full sincerity to share knowledge and provide a better future path for the inmates. Of course, prayers will always be said for the blessings of the father and mother," she added.

Tri, his nickname, also said that previously, the Lapas residents together with UMM had succeeded in publishing a book entitled Titik Nadir Penantian. In fact, soon the book will be in print for the second time. So, Tri encouraged the participants of this second training to be able to absorb knowledge and produce the work of the second, third, fourth and so on.

The Head of UMM LK, Dr. Daroe Iswatiningsih, M.Si. According to her, the inmates already have the potential and ability to write. It just needs to be developed and polished to get better. He is also sure that the participants will write works that are no less interesting than the previous book, namely Titik Nadir Penantian.

He also encouraged the inmates to reflect and read books. So that story ideas and ideas can emerge and become the foundation for writing unique and interesting stories. Evidently, the book Titik Nadir Penantian currently only has one remaining and will soon go to the second printing with several revisions.

"This is also the implementation of UMM in carrying out the tridharma of higher education, namely the aspect of community service. So we don't just focus on education and research, but also have to work on how to empower and provide benefits to others," she said.

The training was also well received by the inmates, one of them by Selvi. According to him, the agenda provides great motivation for them to become better individuals. In addition, it also paved the way for those who want to follow the dream of becoming a writer.

“Even if we don't become writers, we can tell evocative stories from behind bars. How do we get past all this and change people's perspectives that may be wrong regarding prisons and inmates. Hopefully, through this training, our potential will be further honed and we can produce a work,” he concluded.
