Some time ago, oil rice dishes became a trending topic on Twitter. The dish consists of fried chicken or duck, served with seasonings, fried cabbage, and chili sauce with waste cooking oil. At a glance, the food is delicious.

It becomes the concern of the Medicine Lecturer of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, dr. Probo Yudha Pratama Putra. He explains that consuming food with waste cooking oil at a specific time can negatively impact health. It, consequently, can trigger fat deposition in the small intestine, blood vessels, heart, and liver.

“The first appearing disease because of long consumption of waste cooking oil is dyslipidemia (cholesterol). Consuming food cooked with waste cooking oil can increase the saturated fat, which is hard to digest. Next, dyslipidemia can potentially cause several diseases, such as coronary heart, stroke, fatty liver, and cancer,” elaborated Yudha.

He emphasizes that coronary heart disease causes many death rates. It is because of fat blockage from the blood vessels to the heart, and so does stroke disease, which causes fat deposition in the blood vessels, which paralyzes the brain.

“Meanwhile, fatty liver is due to too much fat accumulation in the liver, so it causes liver inflammation. Consequently, there is hepatitis, and it continues to cirrhosis disease and leads to death. Besides, waste cooking oil contains a carcinogen that can cause cancer,” expressed Yudha.

It can be denied that consuming greasy food does increase the savory taste. However, he advises that we should prioritize healthy habits, like healthy food consumption and routine exercise. It is OK to consume greasy food once as long as it does not surpass the limit because some people are at risk for several diseases since they must have a congenital disease.

“We can start to change the common oil with the healthy or disposable one. Then, it can be followed by the regular consumption of food that breaks down the fat, which contains polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) or monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), for example avocados, nuts, canola oil, tunas, and salmons,” said Yudha.

He also advises society to check cholesterol levels routinely. Hence, when fat deposition or the cholesterol level turns high, it can be handled as soon as possible. Yudha asserts that preventing is better than curing. (imh/zak/wil)
