International students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) are encouraged to learn Indonesian language and culture. This time, Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) UMM held a Drama Performance which was played by international students. The performance was held on Friday (5/8), at the UMM Indonesian Literature and Education Drama Laboratory.

The drama stages this time consisted of two groups, the main one consisting of four people each presenting one story. The story that is narrated is the story of Malin Kundang and Lake Toba. Interestingly, this stage is a requirement and test for Indonesian speaking courses.

"This drama performance becomes a graduation test for Indonesian speaking courses for international students," said the head of BIPA UMM, Dr. Arif Budi Wurianto, M.Sc.

Arif said that apart from being a graduation requirement, this performance aims to make foreign students more proficient in speaking and reading Indonesian. At the same time learn how to appreciate and respect Indonesian culture. This certainly helps the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) in developing an internationalization program for Indonesian language and culture.

The lecturer of Indonesian Education and Literature Study Program (PBSI) UMM hoped that after the drama performance, UMM international students could appreciate and learn more about the culture that existed at UMM. They would be more appreciative and prouder of Indonesian culture. So that when these international students return to their home countries, they can share them with their families or communities so that they are more well known.

Meanwhile, an international student named Syed Khaled, who comes from Afghanistan, was happy to be playing the role of Malin Kundang. According to him, this stage further enhances his ability to speak Indonesian. Of course, he was more enthusiastic to continue to practice and understand the related language.

“I am grateful to BIPA UMM and all the teachers who have guided us in learning languages. This is an unforgettable thing, even with a successful drama stage, "he concluded. (cdr/haq/wil)
