As a form of sound art, beatbox is synonymous with adam. However, Elly Rahmawati, one of the new students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), broke this. This student from Malang has even won national competitions to participate in international beatboxes.

Elly said that he entered the world of beatbox in the first grade of Junior High School (SMP). At that time, beatbox was very popular among his school students. Her desire to learn beatbox arose after seeing his upper-level students perform coolly. Since then, he started looking at tutorials on Youtube and studying them self-taught.

"The popularity of beatbox made my friends learn it too. At that time, one friend was better at beatboxing than I was. I don't want to lose and study harder and follow beatbox communities in Malang," said the eldest of two children.

At first, Elly's two people did not agree with her new hobby. According to them, beatbox is something that is not clear. In addition, this field is mainly occupied by men, so it is pretty strange when there are women who do it. Even so, this Law Faculty student continues to study beatbox diligently.

"My parents' thoughts started to change when Swissbeatbox asked me to send a beatbox video in their Youtube content. After that, my parents started to support my hobby. Apart from participating in international beatbox competitions, I often participate in national beatbox competitions. I won several championships such as 1st Place in Equinox Female Beatbox Battle 2020 and 1st Place in Beat da Plague Female Exhibition," she said.

To get to this stage, Elly has gone through many things. One of the difficulties he experienced was learning complex techniques. Moreover, there is no teacher or mentor. She is purely self-taught. In addition, at first, he also felt inferior when participating in a beatbox competition.

"Beatbox competitions, especially those in the general category, are usually followed by men. It also happened when I took part in an offline competition for the first time in Probolinggo. At that time, I was the only female participant. Instantly, my guts shrank, and I forgot the beat I had memorized. Fortunately, I was able to overcome the crisis well," he explained.

Elly's fun activities make her survive in the beatbox, and she can meet various kinds of people from many regions. "Actually, in Indonesia, there are many women who can beatbox. But few dared to show it. This happens because they are ashamed and don't have the confidence to beat the male participants in the competition," said Elly.

He was grateful to be a UMM student. It can not be separated from the number of student activity units (UKM) prepared for students. One of the things he will join is the Student Band Activity Association (Ikabama) which will undoubtedly accommodate his talents and talents while he is at the White Campus. Moreover, many friends in arms like music in the UKM.

Elly hopes that in the future, these women can be more confident in showing off at national events. In addition to sharpening self-confidence, it will also improve women's abilities in the field of beatbox. She also hopes that beatbox will be better known to the general public and not underestimated.

"For the next step, I am preparing a video to enter the international arena again. In addition, I have a dream to be able to win the competition in the general category. Because all this time, I was the champion in the women's category. Even if I join the general ones, my highest achievement can only enter the top four," she concluded. (cdr/syi/wil)
