To empower patent independence in the homeland of Indonesia, four lecturers of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang contributed to participate in the Patent Drafting Camp, held in November 2022. The Directorate General of Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia conducted the event in Malang. Interestingly, one of UMM's representatives, Dr Ahmad Wahyudi, M. Kes., was successfully awarded the best participant in the biotechnology field.
Wahyudi, as familiarly called, values that this event is beneficial to raise awareness of society, particularly for academicians and researchers in issuing patents. Mainly there are still many ideas and works directly claimed by others as their own. Therefore, awareness and understanding of patent issuance are necessary for this era.
Now, the lecturer of animal husbandry studies has finished creating two patents that still need approval. In the event, Wahyudi was not alone; in reality, three other lecturers of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang also attempted to enhance their skills in patent issuance. They were Dr Abdulkadir Rahardjanto, M. Si, Dr Ir. Ali Ikhwan, M. P. dan Vritta Amroini Wahyudi, S. Si, M. Si.
The participants of the patent drafting were equipped with the material for drafting patent specifications theoretically and practically. The drafts were customised with applicable provisions, so after the agenda, the event participants might directly create a patent document independently and well. Hopefully, those patents will be both approved and proposed.

Besides being equipped with material, the participants also had a chance to create a patent draft practically. In addition, the patent area consists of several fields. They are biotechnology, chemistry, mechanics, and electrical science.
In terms of output, Wahyudi perceives that he and other participants feel grateful for gaining various concrete materials. Now, they can already create draft patents independently and well. "Of course, what we got here, we will teach to other friends, not only to fellow academicians but also to those who have not fully known and understood the patent yet. Hence, findings and ideas obtained will be more safe," he said. (imh/wil)
