Based on existing data, the number of publications in international journals in Indonesia has increased by 600% within six years. Previously only eight thousand publications per year have now grown to 50 thousand per year. One of the speakers, Dr. Jeanny Maria Fatimah, M.Si, conveyed this at the Doctoral Colloquium held by the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) on December 10, 2022.

The colloquium aims to provide opportunities for doctors to convey their theoretical ideas or thoughts. So that it can offer benefits to the world of academia, industry, and business. Jeanny, as she is affectionately known, added that apart from the increasing number of international journals, Indonesia is also the country with the highest Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in Southeast Asia, with 2,842 journal patents in 2019.

Regardless of the existing data, Indonesia still has complex issues that must be studied, namely, the use of research for society. According to him, few research results can be used by the community. This was not spared from the many challenges, or obstacles researchers faced so that the results only reached the final report or publication.

“Some of the challenges must be faced are on the institutional aspect, even with the financing aspect, where a large amount of money is required for maintenance costs and product patent socialization. Third, from the aspect of the researcher himself, who is still egocentric and only wants to save the results of his research," he explained.

Moreover, currently, few industries are interested in research results. So the role of government as a bridge is needed. So that this research product can be used and even developed so that it is more beneficial. The downstream process will also be more straightforward.

"I am personally very proud and happy to be able to visit UMM. Moreover, meeting academics and students who are passionate about doing research work," he said.

The Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UMM, Prof. Dr. Muslimin, M.Sc. He said that the academic world, research, and scientific work are closely related to lecturers and students. They have two responsibilities to develop intelligence. Among them are moral responsibility for oneself to improve self-quality and social responsibility to be helpful.

“So that research results don't just become reports or books piled up in the library. It can even be commercialized. Hopefully, this event can become an agenda that we can continue to do so that the academic atmosphere on campus can continue to grow and develop. And the most important thing is producing benefits for the public interest," Muslimin hoped to end. (cdr/wil)
