In recent years, lecturers and students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) have been active in creating various research products. However, the understanding of the protection of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) system is felt to be uneven among researchers. Therefore, UMM provided a solution through a Patent Drafting Workshop with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property on Thursday (06/12).

One of the presenters, Dra. Dede Mia Yusanti, M.L.S.. said that research from patented universities increased from year to year. Unfortunately, in the field, there are several challenges that researchers must face—mainly related to the registration of patents for his creations. In addition, there is a lack of understanding of patent protection and the number of researchers who only pursue scientific publications rather than patent registration.

“Researchers in universities do more basic research than applied research. Their ability to make effective drafting is also still lacking. Then the last challenge is that they are not used to conducting commercial-oriented research,” said the Director of DTLST Patents and Trade Secrets of the DJKI.

To make an effective patent drafting, Aziz Saefulloh, S.T. explained that there are seven stages of drafting. These stages include tracing, creating technical drawings, compiling claims, and compiling a complete description of the invention. Besides, the preparation of the background of the invention, the practice of a comprehensive report of the drawing, and the preparation of the abstract. "This theory of making patent specifications applies to all fields. The only difference between one field and another is in the writing section," said the DJKI Patent Examiner for Engineering.

On the other hand, the Vice-Rector of UMM, Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Si, said that UMM researchers were considered to have produced many academic works. But the problem is the lack of commercialization and protection of these works. Therefore, this workshop on patents became a very strategic moment.

"In Islam itself, we are commanded to protect private property. It also includes the works that we develop. The way to protect our work is through patents. Hopefully, this workshop can increase the number of patented works of UMM academics," he concluded. (cdr/wil)
