Internationalization is a form of developing an educational institution. This is also done by the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). Most recently, the White Campus collaborated with St. Petersburg State University, Russia. The MoU was implemented on November 2, 2022 by signing a memorandum of agreement (MoU).

Roman Romanov as the head of the Russian Bilateral Office for Indonesia in Jakarta explained that the cooperation between UMM and St. Petersburg State University is a point to strengthen bilateral relations between Russia and Indonesia. According to him, the education aspect should have been developed between the two.

He explained that the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Jakarta has existed since the Soviet era in 1965. At the study center, Russian language courses and cultural introductions are available. In addition, there are around 260 Indonesian youths who are now studying as students at various Russian campuses.

“Most of them are interested in majoring in computer technology and nuclear engineering. So, I think this collaboration can also develop science as well as create new innovations. Hopefully UMM and St. Petersburg State University can help each other so that each other's goals can be achieved," he said.

Meanwhile, H. E. Mr. Jose Antonio Morato Tavares as the Indonesian Ambassador to Russia said that this was a new step in the field of research and technology for the two countries. Even with efforts to implement student and lecturer learning programs. Both in analytical and joint research skills. He also believes that this collaboration has great opportunities in developing technology and the process of cultural exchange through educational institutions.

“This MoU must have a strong commitment so that it can have an impact that can be felt by the international community. The Indonesian Embassy to Russia will also always be ready to fully facilitate the cooperation between UMM and St. Petersburg State University," he said.

On the other hand, UMM Vice Chancellor I Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Si explained that this MoU is a good start. Moreover, UMM White Campus has a superior program called the Center of Excellence (CoE). This innovation seeks to prepare human resources (HR) who are able to compete in global competition.

“So, I think there will be many aspects that can be connected and collaborated. Of course, solely for the common good," he said.

Sergey Andryushin, a representative from St. Petersburg State University. He considered that this collaboration with UMM was a step to open a network with universities in Asia, especially Southeast Asia. He wanted this MoU not only to be a scrap of paper, but also to be a strong commitment to implementing real programs.

“Perhaps we can do student exchanges, joint research, international conferences, and a series of others. So, the seriousness of both parties in building and maintaining cooperation is very much needed," concluded Sergey. (cdr/haq/wil)
