UMM Launches CoE Koi, Produces Excellent Human Resources and Reliable Entrepreneurs

The establishment of the Koi Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is considered to be able to encourage the younger generation to become entrepreneurs with qualified skills. In this way, there will be more job opportunities and will be able to alleviate poverty. This was conveyed by the Director of Production and Cultivation of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Arik Wibowo, M.Si. in Malang Koi Show at UMM, last Sunday (28/8).

Furthermore, he said that ornamental fish cultivation has recently increased. So, with the CoE Koi UMM, it is hoped that young entrepreneurs who focus in this field will emerge. Until later it can create new jobs for the community.

"The production of fish in 2021 has increased compared to 2020 with a total of 1.6 billion fish compared to 1.4 billion fish. Thanks to this increase, we are targeting Indonesia to be able to get the title as the number one ornamental fish producer in the world. Beating Singapore, China, even Japan," he said.

Arik also gave great appreciation to UMM for providing a professional school that focuses on ornamental koi fish. He hopes that this CoE can provide new skills for participants so that they can provide education and work in the future.

Meanwhile, CoE Koi UMM is the only professional Koi school organized by universities. There are three main programs in it, namely classes whose material is directly given by experts from the Business and Industrial World (DUDI). In this class, participants will get different material than what is in class.

“Then there are also professional practice programs and koi business practices that will give students real experience managing koi from upstream to downstream. So that they can know and understand anything about koi fish. What should be done to make the fish healthy, free from disease, and how the koi business process will continue,” said Riza Rahman Hakim, S.Pi., M.Sc. as a lecturer of UMM Aquaculture Study Program.

Until now, CoE Koi aquaculture study program at UMM has attracted several DUDI such as CV Indo Koi Malang, Astro Koi Blitar and the Indonesian Koi Lovers Association (APKI). In the future, there will be many partners who will join and contribute to this CoE program.

“Of course, there are various job prospects that CoE Koi professional school graduates can enter. Not only limited to being a koi breeder, but also businessmen, researchers, so that later they can provide new breakthroughs or innovations in the world of koi fish," said Riza concloded. (cdr/*/wil)
