The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) once again engaged the industry to improve the quality of its students and graduates. Recently, UMM collaborated with Toyo Jewelry and Craft in developing the Mineral and Jewelry Center of Excellence (CoE) last Tuesday (13/7). This excellent school is one of the dozens of CoEs established and implemented at UMM.

Meanwhile, Toyo Jewelry and Craft is a company located in Surabaya with several branches. This company produces jewelry and accessories with the best style and quality. The consumer market is also broad, from local to international, made by selected craftsmen.

Yudi Suharsono, S.Psi., M.Si. from UMM explained that White Campus always develops and looks for good opportunities. Mainly to produce qualified human resources (HR). "There will be a series of facilities that this CoE will provide. Starting from the workshop room to the mineral processing and jewelry laboratory," he added.

Yudi, as he is known, said that this excellent school would also provide and build a gemological museum. Participants and students can understand stones, natural gems, and their work. Finally, it can increase the interest of students and alumni in exploring this field.

Interestingly, both parties will also create mineral and jewelry galleries to add to the treasures of knowledge and insight. "There are many agendas that we have planned. We also prepare seminars on this field, short courses, and workshops. Hopefully, this excellent school can produce alumni who understand jewelry and minerals well and can use them," said Yudi.

On the other hand, Suyoto, as the President Director of Toyo Jewelry and Craft, considered that this excellent school initiated by UMM was a good innovation. According to him, the participants who participate in the jewelry and mineral CoE will have skills that match the industry's needs. So, this is a strategic and profitable step for both parties, industry, and universities.

"This collaboration aims to improve the quality of students and alumni so they can face the challenges of increasingly fierce job competition. Hopefully, what we are doing can be useful for many people," he added.

Until now, UMM already has more than 20 CoEs of Excellent Schools who are engaged in various fields—from cocoa production schools, poultry schools, shrimp schools, digital schools, and so on. As for these schools, UMM's efforts are to give birth to a generation with the best skills so that they can compete with other human resources, both from within and outside the country. (cdr/wil)
