Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) never gets tired of upholding its reputation at the national level competition. Newest, good news came from a team of UMM Law students who won the National Moot Court Competition (NMCC) Anti-Human Trafficking of the competition held at Lampung University on October 8, 2023. They won the Best Investigator File category.

Abdillah Cahya the head of the delegation admitted that he was very proud to be able to bring home the champions. Moreover, the competition was prestigious because it was held by the Asian Law Student Association (ALSA). Cahya, his nickname, said that the process of filing and training had been done six months ago. They studied cases related to human trafficking that never ended in Indonesia, especially Lampung.

"During those 6 months, we were always discussing. Even, with the police officers, we learned a lot of knowledge for our research. We often discussed until dawn," he said.

Cahya admitted that he was not very confident when he saw other teams that appeared more prepared and composed. However, he dismissed that feeling because he saw his team members who had also worked hard to win the competition. The files prepared were sufficient and finally, his confidence increased.

"To be honest, we didn't expect much from the championship announcement. Of course, we want to be able to get a champion, especially with the various preparations we have made. Alhamdulillah, when the UMM team was called the winner, it felt like our struggle for 6 months paid off, "he said.

According to him, the jury was interested in the contents of the files they reviewed because all the files made were by the Criminal Code in Indonesia. Besides, Cahya also said that his cooperation with the police directly brought them to the point of victory.

"In that case, we explored the recruitment and shelter of human trafficking victims. From there we took article 2, article 7 paragraph 2, and article 17 of Law No 21 of 2007," he explained.

Cahya also said that human trafficking cases in Lampung have been going on for a long time. Up until now, many human trafficking cases have not been caught. The trafficked victims were also former rehabilitation patients who were later imprisoned in one of the institutions. Victims are treated not like humans and get physical and verbal abuse.

Furthermore, Cahya also said that in this case, a victim died while still in the shelter. This led Cahya and the team to conclude that the defendant was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment and also a fine of 450 million rupiah.

"As a result of this case, I as a student and Indonesian people hope that there will be no more human trafficking. Likewise, I hope that other perpetrators can be quickly detected," he concluded. (*ri/wil/fajr)
