Welcoming the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia (RI), the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) has prepared a long series of celebrations. One of them is a variety of unique and exciting competitions held from last Saturday (13/8) until the end of August. Not only competitors that rely on agility, but the lively Augustan UMM also preserves traditional games such as stilts and clogs.

The Chief Executive of UMM, Frendy Aru Fantiro, M.Pd., explained that this series is a routine agenda that the White Campus always carries out. Had been stopped because of the pandemic, the celebration of Indonesia's independence became a place of euphoria for celebrating and friendship between academics at UMM.

"On August 17th, the ceremony we will be holding will be colored with the participants wearing traditional clothes and nuances of independence. UMM wanted a new atmosphere after two years of not holding a ceremony. We will also invite elementary school (SD) children to participate in the competition. One is the UMM Fashion Kids competition, which encourages them to be more creative and confident. So, the series of competitions that have been prepared are not only for our civitas but also for external parties such as elementary school children," he added.

Frendy said that the enthusiasm of the participants in the competition was very high. It starts from the creative walk that pitted the coordination and creativity of the participants to the duck rowing competition, which was held on the lake, UMM White Campus.

"On the same day, there was also a Bridge Fashion Show competition which presented attractive costumes from students, employees, and lecturers. The Citayam Fashion Show inspired this competition, but we carried it out on the bridge in front of GKB I with several innovations to make it more interesting," said Frendy.

On the other hand, one of the students participating in the competition, Nurul Hamidah, admitted that she was waiting for the series of UMM Augustan competitions this year. Moreover, this agenda could not be carried out in the previous two years due to the pandemic. According to him, the celebration of Independence is the right moment to build togetherness and cooperation so that it can advance Indonesia with various efforts.

"One of the good platforms is through these competitions. Not just competing, but also building friendships that can later become the foundation for building Indonesia together," he said.

Furthermore, he hopes that this celebration of Indonesian Independence can be interpreted more deeply by the younger generation. The spirit of Independence always encourages them to equip themselves with qualified abilities. That way, they can take on a role in advancing the nation. (cdr/*wil)
