The month of Ramadan is the right time to hone good qualities and cultivate a spirit of volunteerism and social generosity. Likewise, what was done the founder of Muhammadiyah, namely Kyai Haji Ahmad Dahlan, was by building a hospital and various other public facilities. That was the opening statement of the study delivered by Dr. Nurbani Yusuf, M.Sc. as the Chairperson of the Batu Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) at the Ramadhan Safari event, which was held at the General Hospital Hall (RSU) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), last Wednesday (6/4).

Furthermore, Nurbani explained that the construction of a hospital (RS) in 1920 was something Muslims widely opposed at that time. All hospitals at that time belonged to the Dutch colonialists. Therefore, the people used to think that the hospital was a European and Christian culture. It builds a perception that if Muslims build a hospital, it is the same as following the teachings of other religions.

"Those thoughts raced on HR. Abu Dawud reads whoever imitates a people. Then he is one of them. Therefore, many opposed the proposal to build a KH Hambali Abu Sujak Ar-Ruslani. Not only from outside Muhammadiyah but from within as well. Despite his opposition, Kiai Haji Ahmad Dahlan remained steadfast in supporting Kiai Sujak's idea of building a hospital," explained the Primary School Teacher Education lecturer (PGSD).

The decision was still taken not without reason; Nurbani said that Kiai Dahlan assessed the construction of the hospital as a way to help the people and jihad to fight polytheism. This idea is also in line with the construction of charities and schools that Kiai Dahlan has founded.

"In building charities and schools, Kiai Dahlan wants to eradicate poverty and ignorance. Seeing this, Muhammadiyah, from the beginning, always prioritized the interests of the community. As the words of the Prophet Muhammad in H.R. Bukhari, the best of people among you are those who benefit others the most. By following the story above, cultivating a spirit of volunteerism and generosity will shape humans into useful people for those around them," said the Expert Staff of the UMM Leadership and Education Center.

On the other hand, the Rector of UMM, Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd. said that the month of Ramadan is the right time for introspection and self-improvement. This is likened to a train stopping at a station to check for deficiencies, before returning for a long journey. It is hoped that these good attitudes and qualities will continue to carry over in the days and months that follow after the month of Ramadan.

"When fasting, of course, we must obey many prohibitions, such as holding back lust, gossiping, and so on. Obeying the rules during the fasting month will shape us into disciplined individuals and bring new habits after the fasting month ends," he concluded. (cdr/syi/wil)
