Prof. Dr. Nazaruddin Malik, M.Si., was elected unanimously as the choice for the Rector of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) on December 20, 2023. With this outcome, he has also been selected as the candidate for the UMM Campus White's rectorship for the next four years, which will be proposed to the Central Board (PP) of Muhammadiyah for approval as per regulations. This result follows a lengthy process that began at the study programs and faculty level last October.

The process commenced with the election and establishment of UMM's senate. It was followed by the formation of the rector election committee for the 2024–2028 period. The subsequent steps involved outreach and solicitation in each faculty, which brought forth the names of potential candidates. "From there emerged names that each faculty member nominated. There were more than 14 candidate names proposed," explained UMM's Head of Public Relations, Moh. Isnaini, M.Pd.

Verification of the candidates was also conducted to ensure all candidates met various criteria. Subsequently, the senate deliberated, voted, and finalized the candidate for the UMM Campus White rectorship to be proposed to the Muhammadiyah Central Board.

Based on the collected data from the nomination process for the Rector, Nazar received the majority of nominations, as proposed by 11 faculties. Meanwhile, the names in the second and third positions received only three and two nominations, respectively. The remaining candidates received only one vote each. Based on these results, the senate and participants agreed and ultimately established Nazar as the unanimously elected candidate for the rectorship to be proposed to the Muhammadiyah Central Board.

The outcome of this selection will then be requested for a recommendation from the East Java PWM (Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership), which will subsequently be proposed to the Muhammadiyah Central Board for formal designation through an official decree.

"Of course, the Muhammadiyah Central Board, which oversees UMM, must validate this outcome. Hopefully, this result will bring greater benefits to the academic community at UMM and more broadly to the wider society," he concluded. (*/fajr)
