Even though the Kanjuruhan tragedy happened a month ago, grief and sadness are still felt. Not only for the victim's family but also for all Malang residents, including the academic community of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). One is through the imposition of black ribbons by UMM students, lecturers, and employees on 9-10 November 2022. Even with the half-mast flag still installed in various areas of the UMM campus. In addition, it also coincides with National Heroes Day, which is commemorated on November 10.

Vice Rector II of UMM, Dr. Nazaruddin Malik, M.Si., said the tragedy of kanjuruhan should be used as a point for self-correction and introspection. Moreover, as a big nation, such an event should not have happened in Indonesia. In fact, according to him, the tragedy will never be tolerated because it shows the level of human civilization of the Indonesian nation.

Nazar, as he is familiarly called, emphasized that Muhammadiyah is attached to the spirit of sacrifice to build the progress of civilization. Even the UMM White Campus always strives to play a role in creating various aspects of the nation's life to achieve advanced civilization.

"We all mourn this year's Hero's Day because of the loss of hundreds of Aremania's lives. So this tragedy must be thoroughly investigated to find a bright spot and serve as a lesson to improve for all elements of the nation," he said.

Nazar explained that UMM is culturally very close to Aremania. It cannot be separated from the existence of the Aremania Campus White Campus Regional Coordinator (Korwil), who has become an icon of Malang culture and civilization development.

Meanwhile, UMM Civil Engineering student Kaniala Intan assessed that the Kanjuruhan incident made people sad and heartbroken. Too many victims fall just because they want to watch a football match.

"Many losses were caused both materially and morally. I also believe that the victims' families are still deeply saddened by the loss. Although it continues, the judicial process is not optimal. There are even some people who protect it," she said.

Regarding Hero's Day, Intan thanked the heroes who had worked for independence. The Indonesian people can live peacefully without colonialism thanks to their spilled blood.

"So, we really should be able to be heroes today. One of them is being someone who dares to say something wrong and deviates from the truth. Then work together to justify and fix it," he concluded. (cdr/wil)
