To appreciate the cleanliness heroes in the White Campus UMM, the Rector of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) awarded dozens of cleanliness heroes: sweepers, gardeners, and campus landfill officers. The accolade was given directly during the 78th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) flag ceremony at UMM helipad on August 17. The ceremony attendees also participated in several competitions while wearing traditional clothes.

Ernawati, one of the awardees, admitted that she was delighted with the award. Even though she is only a janitor, the White Campus UMM still appreciates and gives her a precious accolade.

“I have been part of UMM for 7 years. Though some people still underestimate my job, UMM can elevate and fully appreciate the profession that I perform every day. This also encourages you to keep contributing (positively),” she said happily.

The woman known as Erna believes that the given award totally represents the meaning of the 78th-anniversary celebration of the RI at this time. UMM can manifest Pancasila’s values. “Pancasila has welfare points. Therefore, UMM has implemented them well,” added she

Another interesting thing from the celebration of the 78th-anniversary of Indonesia’s independence at UMM was the presence of dozens of street vendors. The White Campus provided hundreds of free breakfast portions for the flag ceremony participants. The menus served vary: pecel rice, meatballs, chicken soup, and black beef soup. It can be UMM’s contribution to improving the local street vendors’ economy.

Sri Kusmawati, one of the invited MSMEs actors, admitted that this activity immensely helped her. The woman, who usually sells food at the UMM’s Faculty of Engineering canteen, also said that this was not the only time UMM involved her in providing food.

“I am very helped, so there is still income though UMM students are currently on semester break holiday,” explained her.

Last but not least, she expects Indonesians to advance more and be able to represent the people's conscience on the 78th Independence Day: elevating the community's economy and welfare. Sri also hopes the corruption index can be reduced for the nation's sake. (imh/faq/wil)
