Humanitarian movements must be carried out regardless of religion or belief. This is an embodiment of wasathiyah Islam that Muhammadiyah wants to implement. This was conveyed by Deputy Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) Rahmawati Husein, MCP, Ph.D. at the Muhammadiyah Youth National Consolidation event. The activity was held offline at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Dome, last Monday (5/9).

Furthermore, Rahmawati, her nickname, explained that the four principles of humanity are in line with Wasathiyah Islam. The first principle is that humanity prioritizes saving lives and alleviating suffering. The second is to take action based on needs without distinguishing between groups in society.

“The third principle is not to take sides with one group when there is a conflict or dispute. Lastly, there is the principle of self-reliance that is not shaken by political, economic, military or other goals,” he explained.

One of them was done by UMM through Disaster Preparedness Student Volunteers (Maharesigana). How the White Campus encourages students to channel humanity by sharing benefits for others. Starting from helping earthquake disasters to handling Covid-19.

Furthermore, regarding its implementation in Muhammadiyah, Rahmawati said that in dealing with various disasters in Indonesia, MDMC has collaborated with various organizations. Some of these organizations are Caritas, World Vision International (WVI), Fellowship of Churches in Indonesia (PGI), and YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU). At the international level, Muhammadiyah also signed the global Faith Based Organization (FBO) agreement which was held at the High-Level Conference (KTT).

"In addition, MDMC is also the initiator of the establishment of the Indonesian Humanitarian Forum (HFI) and is active at the international level. We are also trying to get qualified from the World Health Organization (WHO) to be able to help more people. With the various things that have been done, we can conclude that interfaith cooperation is a must," said Rahmawati.

Despite having made various inclusive efforts, Rahmawati said there are still people who question it. Some look to favor those who agree. Some even prohibit MDMC from collaborating with organizations of different faiths.

“To understand them, forums like this are very important as a means of education and awareness about the wasatiah Islamic movement. How do we help indiscriminately? I also want to convey that the provision of training on the principles of wasathiyah also needs to be done to understand Muhammadiyah residents and outside Muhammadiyah about the importance of this," she concluded.
