UMM Student Wins National Essay Thanks to Herbal Sunscreen Ideas

Not many ideas can be realized and successfully appreciated as champions. One of the ideas that succeeded in getting the award was to have this Nia Yuniar Fitriana Putri, a student of Pharmacy Study Program, Faculty of Health (Fikes) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). She won second place in the national essay in the herbal cosmetic category. Meanwhile, Nia won the Pharmacy Festival held by Setia Budi University this February.

As she is usually known, Nia explained that she brought up the title "Combination of Basil Leaf Extract and Tomato Fruit as Sunscreen," starting from her desire to learn more about the properties of the two ingredients. Mainly in protecting the skin from UV rays. In addition, the number of people with skin cancer that continues to grow because they are often exposed to UV rays directly also became the fuel for initiating the idea.

Nia said that there are flavonoid compounds in basil leaves that have antioxidants. In comparison, tomatoes contain lycopene, which also contains antioxidants. This substance is proven to protect the skin from UV rays and make the skin healthier.

"If these lycopene and flavonoid substances are combined, it will certainly produce high antioxidant substances that can protect our skin," she said.

This class of 2020 student again said that there were obstacles she felt during the preparation of the essay. One of them is the lack of journals that discuss the use of basil and tomato leaves. But fortunately, during the writing of the paper, she was greatly assisted by seniors who were members of the Hypothalamus study group.

"This study group gave me a lot of influence and helped while I was compiling this essay. Various discussions and inputs were given so that I could get many perspectives. Take things that can be used in essays to richer what I write. So that they can compete for the champion in the competition," said the Jombang native woman.

Finally, she hopes to realize the ideas she initiated in the future. It can also be continued at the stage of further research with the necessary additions. In addition, this sunscreen can be a solution for healthier cosmetic products with herbal ingredients and can replace cosmetics from synthetic materials.

"Of course, if this is successfully realized, hopefully, it can be useful for the community in protecting the skin, thereby reducing people with skin cancer," she said. (apg/haq/wil)
