The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) once again won an achievement in the national event. This time, the proud news came from the Faculty of Law, which won 1st place in the National Political Debate Event 2.0 held by BEM FMIPA, State University of Surabaya. Yogi Syahputra Al Idrus, Ibn Artafela, and Felisyah Herlinda Sari successfully won it. Coupled with the award as the best speaker that Ibnu Artafela obtained. The event, which was held on June 4-5, was attended by 32 teams from various universities in Indonesia.

"We've been preparing for a long time. Since the beginning of May, we have gathered and practiced with the hope of getting maximum results," said Yogi, one of the team members.

Furthermore, he said that the debate had a big theme, "Actualization of Critical Reasoning for the Millennial Generation in Reflecting on National Issues Amid National Political Dynamics." The system also applies a knockout system, where the team that loses automatically cannot continue the competition process.

In the preliminary round, Yogi and his team had to fight a team from Medan State University. Armed with lots of practice and materials, the motion regarding “Health BPJS that Provides More Benefits than Disadvantages can be appropriately handled. Interestingly, in the next round, they have to discuss the Concurrent Position Officials often encountered in various regions.

After several stages, the UMM White Campus team finally entered the semi-finals and had to face Padjadjaran University (Unpad). “In our opinion, Unpad is the most difficult opponent because the discussion is quite interesting and challenging. We felt like we were going to lose, but Alhamdulillah, we won and qualified for the final round,” Yogi explained.

In the final round, Indonesian Muslim universities were already waiting to compete for the first position. The motion that must be won is related to the Merdeka Learning Program at the MBKM Merdeka campus. The UMM team, which was in a contra position, could win the final and become the first winner.

“Of course, we provide logical arguments along with accurate data. That way, we can provide qualified opinions and rebuttals. Alhamdulillah, we succeeded in becoming the first winner in this debate competition,” said Yogi.

Regarding the obstacles, according to him, the biggest problem is in the network aspect. Considering that the competition was held entirely online. Apart from that, there are no significant obstacles. Moreover, the Faculty of Law UMM lecturers were very supportive and gave many directions. Meanwhile, Yogi and his team are members of the community in FH UMM, namely the Komunitas Riset Debat (KRD).(cdr/zak/wil)
