Hair transplantation is an alternative to overcome the problem of baldness on the head accompanied by damage to hair follicles. Even now, this transplant is becoming known by the public since several Indonesian artists have done it—especially those who want to overcome the problem of baldness or thinning hair.
Hospital Doctor (RS) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Dr. dr. Ruby Riana Asparini, SpBP-RE (K). explained that a hair transplant is not a major operation and is very safe to do. This transplant can be done on anyone of all ages. Although it is not classified as a major operation, this operation can only be performed in a limited number of certain hospitals (hospitals).
"There are several criteria in hair transplantation that must be met by patients, sufficient hair loss, good donor area hair, healthy scalp, good general health, and patients have reasonable expectations," said the lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine.
Furthermore, Ruby, her nickname, explained that there are several preparations that patients must make when undergoing this operation. The first is a special diet for one week before transplantation. This aims to reduce the blood that comes out during surgery. In addition, there is a physical examination and blood to determine the possibility of the patient suffering from certain diseases or disorders. Finally, the patient must stop taking aspirin, vitamin E, dietary supplements, and blood-thinning drugs one week before the operation.
"In the transplant process itself, the doctor was assisted by a transplant team who opened empathy for up to five people. It takes about four to five hours with a conscious state. The higher the patient's compliance with instructions before transplantation, the less blood will be lost. This will also speed up the operation process," said the Jakarta-born lecturer.
Ruby Returns said that this hair implant has some side effects after surgery. However, these effects are only temporary. One of the side effects that is felt is swelling of the face without pain. The effect usually begins on the second or third day after planting and lasts for five to seven days. Other effects that may arise are mild bruising around the eyes that will disappear in a few days, numbness in the donor area, and mild pain in the donor area that resembles pain after minor surgery.
"After surgery, patients are also not allowed to wash their hair. Hair washing should be carried out by one of the transplant teams on the second, fourth and eighth day after hair transplantation. Patients are only allowed to wash their hair after one week after surgery using an antiseptic shampoo," explained Ruby.
Furthermore, the grafted hair will grow normally three months after the implantation process. The hair will continue to grow normally and have the same properties as the origin of the hair.
"For example, if the donor comes from the back of the head, then the implanted hair will have the same properties and resilience as the hair on the back of the head and will not follow the hair loss process. The cost of this hair transplant procedure depends on the level of difficulty, the number of hair follicles removed, and the doctor's experience.
