Muhammadiyah isn’t an anti-political party because its history records that there is no ideology contradicting the two things, as said by the Chairman of Muhammadiyah Center, Dr. H. M. Busyro Muqoddas, at the consolidation event of the Institute for Wisdom and Public Policy [Trans.: Lembaga Hikmah dan Kebijakan Publik (LHKP)]  throughout Java. The agenda held on May 17, 2023, at Kapal Garden Hotel of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), became the effort of Muhammadiyah to support the political year 2024.

This event aimed to strengthen the strategic role of LHKP in national politics and public policy affairs. Busyro also said that the connection between Muhammadiyah and politics is clearly stated in the ideology and ideals of Muhammadiyah.

“As an organization, Muhammadiyah is inseparable from the intensity of hablumminallah (Trans.: relationship with Allah) and hablumminannas (Trans.: association with other humans). So is with political activities, especially in creative politics; then we have to be wiser. The word “wiser” here means a combination of the sensitivity of a pure heart and a sane mind,” said Busyro.

Furthermore, he said that although Muhammadiyah isn’t a political party, it still has an excellent democratic tradition and a democratization process. “As one of the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) elements, Muhammadiyah will always keep its distance, especially seeing practical politics like now. Muhammadiyah will consistently strengthen its identity and spread benefits to the society because it is Allah and Muhammadiyah congress participants’ commission,” asserted Busyro.

The consolidation is the first held agenda and will be conducted in 5 other regions until it ends in a national work meeting by upcoming August. On the same occasion, the Institute for Wisdom and Public Policy of the Muhammadiyah East Java Regional Leadership also launched Maklumat.id., a website allowing people to express their political perspectives.

On the other hand, Dr. Fauzan, M. Pd., the Rector of UMM, said that the most important thing from this consolidation is the final result. In terms of preparing Muhammadiyah cadres, LHKP needs to use different paradigms, so the cadres can later be accepted by any audience.

“Like the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, which has collaborated with many parties. For example, with a series of local governments to help and contribute directly in related areas. Giving input in many aspects and sectors. Recently, UMM has collaborated with the Government of Tabanan Regency regarding Subak in Bali,” said Fauzan.

Therefore, Fauzan added that inclusivity or open-mindedness should be the benchmark of LKHP, notably if this institution aims to achieve wisdom. With that said, Muhammadiyah develops from not only its biological aspects but also sociological and ideological ones. (imh/zak/wil)
