The Ministry of Public Works and Residences (PUPR): Engineer Profession of UMM Had A Huge Chance to Compete Globally

In the moment of realizing the professional engineer to increase the competitiveness facing the implementation of  ASEAN economic public blueprint (MEA) 2025. Program Study of Professional Engineering (PSPPPI) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held a general lecture on Saturday morning (14/3).

Dr. Ir. Putut Marhayudi, MM, Director of Construction Services Provider Development, Directorate General of Construction, The Ministry of Public Works and Residences (PUPR), and Ir. Wahyu Hendrastomo, MM., IPU, Head of General Budget Section, Strategic Region Development Center, Regional Infrastructure Development Agency, Ministry of PUPR.

Putut who was pointed as the first keynote speaker explained that the opportunities and strategies in the face of increasingly fierce competition in the construction world. “In this time, we need to equalize our capability with oversea engineers especially in ASEAN,” he said.

This equalization could be conducted through the MRA Program or Mutual Recognition Arrangement. Finally, the engineer who had the competences could use those competencies to contend in ASEAN globally.

Putut also spotlighted related to Indonesia as the world big market of construction. There were at least 286 foreign construction service business entities active in Indonesia. It was undeniable indeed if Indonesia became one of the prima donnas of the construction market after China, South Korea, and India.

Many construction service providers chose Indonesia because they were affordable and the material was easy to get. "Engineers from Indonesia, of course, must be able to compete with those who come from abroad," he said.

This equalization could be done through the MRA program or Mutual Recognition Arrangement. Each competency that had been possessed by Engineers can ultimately be used to compete globally in ASEAN.

In addition to the competitiveness strategy, there were important things that must be prepared also namely administrative such as the Professional Engineer Application Form (FAIP) and Sustainable Professional Development (PKB). For example, in FAIP, three things became a condition for certification. Having a professional knowledge base, having experience and having competence.

PPI Study Program students for the 2019/2020 period this time numbered 84 people and came from various backgrounds. The participants consisted of the management and members of the Indonesian National Consultants Association (Inkindo) and the East Java Indonesian Engineers Association (PII). Also, some participants came from internal UMM, namely the lecturers who totaled 17 students.

Ir. Annisa Kesy Garside, ST., MT., IPM., ASEAN Eng., Head of PPI said, Mutual Recognition Arrangement had several advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, Mutual Recognition Arrangements could improve the competitiveness of the professional service areas that they managed.

MRA also continued Annisa, which could improve the skills of professional services. "Because of the exchange in the service sector, food will improve the quality of human resources in a country quickly," he said.

 

On the same occasion, the Vice-Chancellor I of UMM, Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Sc. placed great hopes on PSPPI UMM so that it could become one of the gates of the birth of great Indonesian Engineers. "What is also important for Indonesia is not just human resources, but also infrastructure," he said. (adq)
