Information technology is now no longer just a tool, but technology also contributes to society's shift in social reality. In discussing this issue, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held a webinar entitled Digital Literation Through Film and social media at the end of last February. This agenda presented two interesting speakers, Novin Farid Setyo Wibowo, M.Si, a film expert at UMM, and Moch Fuad Nasvian, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom, a social media enthusiast.

Films and social media in the modern era are discussed. Mainly because of the transformation of the two. Novin, as he is familiarly called, said that the web series, Layangan Putus, succeeded in changing people's perception of reality. Dramatization actions packaged in audio-visual shows have succeeded in constructing reality in society.

"This is proof that films or audio-visual shows in their capacity are not only able to influence attitudes but also change people's mindsets. Everywhere it's my dream, not hers to be booming. The film is one of the media that has the power to change the reality in society," said Novin.

He further explained that films could represent and reflect social life. In addition, the message conveyed in the film can influence a person's behavior, which will create a new reality. Novin also said that movies could also function as a medium for propaganda and ideology spread. With this growing function and providing cognitive and affective impacts, films also have a conative effect that refers to actual behavior or provides a change in attitude towards the audience.

"Film is another reality from the real reality. Interestingly, in cultivation theory, it is stated that humans who always watch certain programs for a long time will have an understanding that the world around them is like what is shown on television or the spectacle they see," said Novin.

On the same occasion, Fuad Nasvian explained about social media. According to him, increasingly sophisticated digital transformation influences the current generation who are connoisseurs, especially generation Z or millennials exposed to the era of digital liberation through social media.

He further explained that the presence of the industrial revolution 4.0 and technological developments changed current conditions. The current generation has access to learn anything only through their smartphones. However, he reminded that this progress did not always mean good for the community. There are also many negative things that can be accessed easily through this device.

"In the end, it all comes down to our attitudes and choices. We can use it to work and produce great works. Or even we will be destroyed by technology, "said Fuad. (cdr/haq/wil)
