The best human being is a human who can benefit others. It was confirmed by the Regent of Pasuruan, H. M. Dr. Irsyad Yusuf, S.E., M.MA, at a guest lecture by postgraduate students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). The event was held on January 31, 2023, at the Kapal Garden Sengkaling Hotel.

The Regent of Pasuruan, more familiarly called Gus Irsyad, revealed that his success as Regent of Pasuruan was due to his willingness to provide benefits to the community, nation, and state.

"Contributing to society can be started from anywhere. It doesn't have to be like me. You can be a businessman, politician, educator, or something else. But it must have explicit goals. For example, if you become a regent, you must have a vision and mission in the development program. Where the purpose of the development itself is for the welfare of the community, "explained Ersyad.

The UMM alumnus also explained that in building, it was not only clear goals but also had the right goals and targets so that the program could achieve the goals that have been announced.

"In addition, collaboration is also important in accelerating the development process. If you want to accelerate development in education, the government must collaborate with universities. So that the campus will later help to provide input or participate in building various sectors," said the Chairperson of the UMM Alumni Family Association (IKA).

Irsyad also encouraged students to believe in the process and keep going despite the many obstacles. Even by expanding connections and colleagues in building a career. He also asked them to remember their teachers and students who had educated and polished them to become successful individuals.

In line with what was conveyed by Irsyad, Deputy Regent of Malang Drs. H. Didik Gatot Subroto, S.H., M.H. also encourages students to contribute to the field they are involved in. It's okay if you start from the bottom as long as you can become a center of benefit for others.

He even recounted his career in politics, which began with becoming a campus activist. Then after graduating, he was entrusted with becoming the head of the village and continued as a member of the DPRD until he became chairman of the DPRD. Thanks to his expertise in leadership, he was finally given the mandate to serve as Deputy Regent of Malang.

"All of that is obtained from the process of learning and effort. Besides that, istiqomah is also important in learning because out there, you will meet thousands of people with the same desires or aspirations as you," said Didik, a UMM alumnus.

On the other hand, UMM Vice Rector III, Dr. Nur Subeki S.T, M.T., assesses that alumni have an essential role in building a competitive higher education ecosystem. One of them is collaborating with many parties where there are many opportunities that students and alumni can achieve in the government sector, companies, and other institutions.

"Therefore, take good things that can be emulated from alumni. Make it a motivation and build yourself to become a person who has a positive impact. Not only for UMM but also for the nation," he concluded. (cdr//zak/wil)
