Food is a resource for humans to get nutrients that will be processed into energy. Choosing some food by mistake can cause poisoning and even death if not treated immediately. A lecturer in Nursing Science at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Indah Dwi Pratiwi, S.Kep., Ns., M.Ng. said it is essential to be careful when choosing food. Food poisoning can be caused by small things that are not noticed.

" The triggers can be caused by several factors such as food contaminated by bacteria, viruses, parasites, expired food, unhygienic manufacturing processes, and food processing processes that pay less attention to cleanliness," said Indah.

Adults with good immunity will be stronger to deal with these foreign substances, unlike the others, which are infants, the elderly (65 years and above) and people with low immunity. Food poisoning can have negative and fatal effects on them.

Indah explained that the symptoms of food poisoning are dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If you experience this, the initial treatment that can be taken is to ensure that all food that has been infected with the bacteria is out of the body.

"Our body has a mechanism to automatically excrete substances that are not supposed to be in the body. This process must be backed up by drinking plenty of water and getting enough rest. When the symptoms have begun to subside, it is best not to eat foods that contain irritants. It would be better to consume foods such as bread or crackers first," she explained.

For patients who cannot tolerate nausea, one of the pharmacology therapies is the administration of anti-nausea drugs to provide a sense of comfort. However, nausea and vomiting are the process of expelling bacteria that have entered the body. Therefore, it is a common occurrence.

In the end, Indah emphasized that many cases of death due to food poisoning were not caused by the bacteria, but the dehydration that was not helped due to the lack of fluid replacement in the body, especially in the three groups above.

"Therefore, ensuring hydration when suffering from food poisoning is the most important aspect of treatment," she concluded. (dit/wil/put)
