Daffa, the Best Graduate of UMM who Mastered Ten Languages

Doing things according to passion always produces brilliant results. That is what happened to Daffa Indra Arya Wardhana. His love for foreign languages became his unyielding spirit in studying English Education which led him to achieve the title of the best graduate at the graduation (25/1) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). Interestingly, he mastered English and five other foreign languages, namely Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, French, and German.

Not only foreign languages, but Daffa also mastered several regional languages. He is fluent in Javanese, Banjarese, and Sundanese. Since she was in elementary school, Daffa has been interested in learning languages. The reason is he is very fond of chatting, especially listening to people's stories. "I enjoy hearing people talk. Especially the variety of accents that people have. From these stories, I can understand other people better and also give meaning to life," said the eldest child.

Uniquely, his hobby when he was in college was taking public transportation. Through her hobby, Daffa can get to know various kinds of people, from lecturers employees to those who have big businesses. It was felt that inspired him to continue working.

Regarding the technique of mastering the language, Daffa said the key is to get used to the target language. Assisted by watching movie tv-series and following the development of foreign music. Don't forget to read books that use the target language and use it to communicate. Those things are the keys for Daffa to master some languages.

Even so, learning a foreign language is not without obstacles. The biggest challenge is writing languages ​​that don't use an alphabet system, such as Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin. However, this did not discourage Daffa from trying to understand and master foreign languages. According to him, this expertise can be a stepping stone to realizing his determination to study abroad.

"Mastery of foreign languages ​​gives us the privilege to be able to get scholarships abroad. It also spurred my enthusiasm to continue learning, he said.

Despite focusing on the academic field, Daffa does not deny that participation in organizations is essential. So, he joined the Semi-Autonomous Institute (LSO) and the Faculty's Student Executive Board (BEM). In 2020, he also became an awardee for the Pioneer Teaching Campus Program and served as a teaching assistant at SDN Tegalgondo 02 Malang Regency. In addition, there was also the opportunity for an internship at the Agency for Personnel and Human Resources Development (BKPSDM), Among Tani Batu City Hall. (cdr/wil)
