Students from the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) have clinched a Silver medal and the Special Price from King Abdulaziz University at the prestigious Seoul International Invention Association Fair (SIIF) in 2023. The Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) organized the competition in South Korea from October 31 to November 4, 2023.

Alifia Ariana Prabaswara, one of the team members, stated that their innovation was a road surface roughness detection tool using an Image Program system. They named the device Smart Miu Meter. Additionally, their team developed a specialized application connected to the device called Image Capture (CIGAM).

She explained that the tool was created considering the importance of road quality in society. Hence, there is a need for road surface maintenance efforts. Unlike other devices, the Smart Miu Meter utilizes image processing methods, making it more convenient.

"Although there were many cool innovations from other countries, we always believed that the technology we brought from Indonesia was equally good and of high quality," she said.

Furthermore, Alifia mentioned that the CIGAM application can be accessed internationally from anywhere and by anyone. During the exhibition, their team attracted the attention of the Bangladesh government. They received an offer from the Bangladesh government to collaborate on road development in Bangladesh.

"Improving roads in their country is one of our cooperation goals. It was especially considering the suboptimal road quality and many remote areas that are often overlooked, resulting in numerous damaged roads. Currently, it's still in the process of discussion and approval," she explained.

However, Alifia initially felt pessimistic because their booth had fewer visitors than other innovative booths. Yet, they managed to receive an international award. The student from Lamongan also mentioned that the tool innovation they created is not yet entirely perfect as it still uses a USB cable, making it look somewhat untidy. Therefore, she and her team continue striving to make the device wireless.

She also expressed gratitude to UMM for its continuous support from various aspects. Additionally, she received a scholarship during her studies at the White Campus. She believes that UMM always provides opportunities and support for those who want to develop their potential and talents.

"Of course, students should take advantage of this to reach their best potential. With broad facilities and opportunities available, as students, we need to make the best use of them," she concluded. (*ri/wil/fajr)
