The high rate of bullying cases in 2023 has become a significant issue in Indonesia's education system. It is also a reflection of the poor understanding of Pancasila and Pendidikan Pancasila dan Kewaarganegaraan (PPKn) (trans: Civics Education) values. It was stated by Moh. Wahyu Kurniawan, S.Pd. M.Pd., a lecturer in the Civics Education Study Program at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM).

Wahyu, his nickname, said that Indonesia is currently facing the emergency of violence and moral crisis. It is proven by the fact that the understanding of the value of Civics Education has not been maximized.

"Civics lessons should help students to develop a wise attitude, high empathy, and the ability to differentiate between good and bad behavior. In addition, Civics lessons are supposed to build student characteristics through the study of civic disposition or civic leadership that aims to form a smart and good citizen," he said.

Wahyu also highlighted the other factors that triggered bullying cases. He emphasized the need for improvement in the Civics learning approach, which is still too focused on the cognitive aspect. Meanwhile, the attitudinal aspects of children have not received sufficient attention. In addition, there is also moral degradation in children.

"They tend to memorize Pancasila without internalizing it in their daily lives. It is important to remember that the values contained in Pancasila have a close relevance to the reality of life," he added.

For example, the first principle leads every religion to goodness and peace, by strongly condemning physical and mental violence as sinful. The second principle emphasizes that every Indonesian citizen should behave with humanity, reflected in an attitude of mutual respect, mutual appreciation, avoiding conflict, and helping others.

"Meanwhile, the third principle encourages the spirit of unity and cooperation to maintain the peace and unity of the Indonesian nation. The fourth and fifth precepts of Pancasila also serve as a moral foundation in overcoming the challenges of bullying in Indonesia," said Wahyu.

He also mentioned that to overcome the problem of bullying, there are several steps that can be done. Starting from educational environment, the school should build an atmosphere that applies anti-violence principles through school policies, improve the quality of education through intra and extra-curricular activities, improve the quality of education through extra-curricular activities, and improve the quality of education through extra-curricular activities. Last but not least, schools must create a warm and pleasant atmosphere to build child-friendly schools.

"However, the problem of bullying cannot be managed and relies on the school only. All stakeholders, including parents and the community, have a responsibility in minimizing this case. Moreover, parents must create a culture of transparency to their children, be a good role model, teach tolerance, and support anti-bullying values in their daily lives," he concluded. (*lai/wil/put)
