Recently, there have been many cases of youths who choose to end their own lives. Many reasons lead to their decision to give up. It could be facing a dead end, a failure that is impossible to find a way out, and a loss of confidence in themselves.

It was mentioned by Hudaniah, S. Psi., M.Si, as a Lecturer in the Psychology Study Program at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) in her talk at UMMTalks this October. According to her, the problems that make someone choose to commit suicide are various and unpredictable.

"So far, there are no psychologists who have revealed the problems told by their clients. But according to research, four things are the main problem," she said.

The four include interpersonal, intrapersonal, family and educational problems. Intrapersonal problems are the most common cases experienced by teenagers. According to the research, approximately 30% of teenagers suffer from this problem. Intrapersonal is related to one's own identity, what one thinks, self-evaluation values, self-esteem, and how one deals with conflicts within oneself. Interpersonal relates to receiving information between two or more people, such as friendship, family, and other relationships.

Social media is one of the factors that can make things even worse. Referring to the research mentioned by the psychology lecturer, the use of social media impacts mental health. "Most of the time, when we are down, we look for information relevant to our condition. It means that when we are sad, we look for information relevant to our sadness or what we call upset," she explained.

Not only that, the trauma from the past and fear of the future can also be a cause for giving up. Hudan emphasized that the past cannot be repeated. Thus, humans must be able to understand it and find ways to improve it in the future by self-evaluating, approaching, and trying not to let it happen again.

People in trouble need the sensitivity of the people around them. It takes high sensitivity from those closest to him to know what he is going through. Because it could be people who look happy in front of it are experiencing big problems.

Hudan said that those who experience problems usually change their attitude. It can be seen in how they dress, their productivity, or anything else. Therefore, as the closest person, one of the first things we can do is to be a good listener to those in need, likewise by providing support, both moral and material, to them.

"It's okay to feel tired, but you shouldn't stop at the feeling of tiredness. You have to be stronger. Give strength to those who are about to give up. There needs to be an increase in social sensitivity. If we strengthen each other, Inshaallah, we can help each other overcome problems," she said. (Tri/Wil/Put)
