Raising the phenomenon of food waste problems, three students from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) won an essay at the international level. The three UMM students are Sayla Salsabila, Ismail Ramadhani, and Audilia Safira from the Faculty of Psychology, who won third place in the 2022 International Scientific Essay Competition. The competition was held online by the University of Lampung in early October.

The big theme of the competition is Optimizing the Utilization of Technology to Development Goals, with three categories in it. Starting from the field of education, economic and social culture, the area of food and agriculture, and the field of health and environment. Of the three categories mentioned, the team from UMM chose a type in food and agriculture with the title Nutretor: Food Nutrition Detection Technology as Food Waste Global Issues Solution in Realizing SDGs 2030.

Sayla, the team leader, said that the reason for raising the title was that food waste is a fairly complex problem. Although several solutions are available, they assess that these efforts have not effectively overcome them.

“Therefore, we are trying to find a solution that can overcome the basic problems of food waste, one of which is the bad stigma of leftover food. The food is still very suitable for consumption. Thus, we hope that our idea can reduce the potential of food so that it does not become food waste,” said Sayla.

Furthermore, the student born in 2002 explained that making essays begins with research. Then formulate ideas based on the research basis until they are finally put into writing. During the report of the essay, he felt that the process that was quite hindering was research. Moreover, there is only a handful of discussion about the appropriateness of food.

“Even so, this lack of literature is a challenge for us to come up with good ideas. This competition is also international, so all the competition processes from start to finish are in English. Therefore, we are challenged by this, considering that we are also from the international psychology class at UMM,” explained the student from Nganjuk.

They are grateful to be under the auspices of UMM. Especially with the number of student activity units (UKM) that increase the potential of each student. One is the Scientific Discussion Forum (FDI) UKM, which can produce excellent researchers and writers. Many of its members have successfully won various competitions.

“Hopefully, this achievement can be a trigger for other friends and us so that we can make achievements and make the name of the White Campus proud. We also want to show that private university students can excel and beat other universities,” she said. (apg/zak/wil)
