Seventeen thousand five hundred registrants from various regions had to compete for seats as University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) students. In total, there are 8,000 seats up for grabs through a series of tests. The number of UMM White Campus registrants in 2022 has increased compared to last year, from the range of 14,500, which rose to 17,500.

"Yes, we only accepted 7000 to 8000 students this year. So, the prospective students inevitably must compete fiercely to be accepted at UMM. The number of registrants this year increased by around 3000 people. That number can continue to rise because we are still opening registration until early September," added the Head of New Student Admission (PMB) UMM, Nurudin.

According to him, several faculties have increased registrants. One of them is the Faculty of Engineering, which previously stood at almost 2000, now it has nearly reached 3000. The number is dominated by Informatics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering study programs.

“One of the factors for this increase is the demand in the industrial world. Human resources who master IT are certainly needed with the changes and technological developments. Moreover, more and more sectors are coming here that inevitably have to use digital aspects. It encourages prospective students to take study programs that will make it easier for them to become an IT expert,” added the lecturer in Communication Studies.

Apart from the trend, Nurudin said that dozens of Centers of Excellence (CoE) owned by UMM also attracted attention. Especially with programs that attract the Business World and the Industrial World (DUDI) as tutors. Even with the possibility of job opportunities that can be obtained before graduating from UMM.

CoE also provides opportunities for students to gain knowledge not obtained in lectures. One of them is through internships which can later replace the student semester credit system (SKS) of up to 20 credits. Interestingly, CoE participants can also get a thesis equivalent to graduating with a work that replaces the thesis.

"This interesting breakthrough is certainly the main attraction for prospective students. Moreover, thousands of collaborations are owned by UMM at national and international levels. So that students can certainly graduate on time and become independent individuals," he added.

In response to this increase, the Chancellor of UMM, Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd., said that the White Campus continued to improve its service and management so that this large number of students could be maximized. In addition, the process of transferring knowledge and skills can be carried out well. This is by the existing program at UMM, namely UMM PASTI. The point is that students are ensured to graduate on time and must work and be independent.

"If it goes well, the graduates that UMM prints will take a strategic role in realizing a golden Indonesia 2045. So, quantity must be followed by good quality as well. I am sure that UMM has that quality and can print future golden generations," concluded Fauzan. (cdr/*/wil)
