A guest lecture held by Department of Communication Science, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) on Wednesday (6/6) in AR Fahruddin hall presented Dr Turnomo Rahardjo, Intercultural Communication Expert of University of Diponegoro, Semarang. The material of the guest lecture was the theory and method of intercultural communication research.
In his explanation, Turnomo said, Indonesia was a unique country. The diversities in the nation by slogan “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” was indeed unchallenged by other countries. “However, by such diversities cultures can also lead to conflicts which are motivated by culture; conflict in Sampit, for instance,” Turnomo said.
Furthermore, Turnomo stated about claiming on culture that is often acknowledged by other country, such as traditional dance, Pendhet, which was performed in the tourism advertisement of Malaysia. According to him, by this condition, Indonesian should be aware of their culture so that they could give high attention and preserve their culture.
“So far, our nation was weak in the culture and law fields because there are many of our culture is not patented yet. It makes other countries claim our culture easily,” added Turnomo.
Turnomo believed, it was the only way to promote the Malaysia tourism because Malaysia did not have various cultures like Indonesia; so that in the tourism advertisement they use Indonesian culture. “However, in terms of communication ethics, of course it is worth to be questioned,“ stated Turnomo.
Meanwhile, the students of Communication Science were asked to do many researches about intercultural communication. Cultural property in Indonesia was very potential to be the object of research. On the contrary, research was expected could give many contributions in enriching and strengthening Indonesian culture. “Research about intercultural communication is enabling to be the basic of conflicts resolution approach. Sometimes, we do not notice it but by the research, there will be many valid data revealed,” Turnomo added.
Turnomo suggested, there should be dialogs about cultural claiming between the two countries. In advance, Indonesia has to have a strong laws in order to other country will not patented its culture,” He said.
Chairman of Communication Science Department Nurudin, MSi explained that the activity was a part of good academic traditions. Students of communication science which known had a high creativity were also expected to have sensibility of any research topics dealing with social problems; not merely about practical problems in their study field. “I hope, in the future students can be more observant in discussing their research topics,” Nurudin said.
