There was an urgent need for dormitories for students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
Therefore UMM collaborated with the Ministry of Public Housing (Menpera) of the Republic of Indonesia to build simple Flats Rent (Rusunawa).
The building process of Rusunawa began in March 2008 and ended in December 2008.
Rusunawa of UMM was built on a 4000 m² area located on the north side of UMM Campus III complex.
The building was built in two blocks (Block A and Block B) and each of them is 38 x 22 m in size.
The capacity of students Block A can hold is 240 people and 192 people in Block B.
Each block consists of two buildings with four floors.
The student residences are placed on the second to fourth floors.
The first floor is used as for public facilities.
Each room for students is 5.2 x 4.2 m in size with a bathroom inside the room.
The capacity of each room in Block A is four students while every room in Block B is able to accommodate three people.
The room facilities consists of a bed, clothes cupboard, and learning desk-chairs.
Other facilities outside the rooms include: kitchen, places of worship, halls, parking lots, parks, internet, and others.
Rusunawa of UMM has two functions.
Block A is used for temporary occupancy for a new student who participates in the Personality and Leadership Development Training (P2KK) Program who attends two times per month.
Block B is allocated as a residence for new students who are interested in renting, especially for women students who come from outside of Malang.
The building of Rusunawa helps students out if needed and although it is only used by a small number of students the blocks are equipped with adequate facilities.
Rusunawa hopes to be an inclusive student complex and have maximum appropriate function to support students learning.
