The UMM Choir "Gita Surya" received a standing ovation from about 350 spectators who attended the mini concert in BAU Hall on Saturday (11/7). After bringing five songs, the audience stood up applauding and admiring their appearance. This concert was a preparation for the 2009 National Student Choir Competition this month.

There were34 singers, with Ignatius Fareta as the conductor and musician Cristian, performing different kinds of classical, pop, to folklore songs. Classic song titled Lo Mison Giovinetta opened the 2-hour concert. Then the choir brought the audience in a traditional atmosphere through song “Montor-montor Cilik”. Like children, they danced, demonstrated, and rode amontor (bicycle). The song from Central Java was full of humorous verse, and it made the audience laughed. It was more interesting when they sounded “Brumm...Brumm... Ngok ngok... Grok grok...”. No wonder the audience gave standing applause.

The performance was closed by a song from Ponorogo, Kembang Suko. Those 34 singers sang the song about the mother’s advice to her son to be careful to live.

The concert seemed complete with the performance of Medical Harmony Choir UMM, Brawijaya Economic Choir and Cientifico Choir. "We do our best to prepare this concert. Songs, dances, and costumes have been thought out carefully, to get the best results," said Chief of Team Competition, Imron.

Imron said that the competition would be held on 19th – 22nd of Novemberin ITB. “The competition gives spirit for Gita Surya. Finally we are advanced to semifinal after few years we did not join any competition. We hope we can be the winner,” Imron hoped.

In that competition, 12 of 20 semifinalis would advance to the final. For East Java, Universitas Brawijaya and ITS were also advanced to the semifinal.(rka/t_ris)
