University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) graduated a new Doctor again. Zainur Wula was recorded as the second Doctor who was graduated by UMM after Sujanto who graduated last semester. The Vice Rector II University of Muhammadiyah Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) was declared as a Doctor in the Social and Political Science field after passing an open examination on Saturday (8/4).

The director of Postgraduate Directorate UMM Dr Latipun explained, Zainur was a second-generation student in Doctoral of Social and Political Science UMM. His study period was relatively short, which was less than 4 years. Moreover, “Insya Allah in the near future, there will be his several classmates and students from the previous class take an open examination,” said Latipun before attending the open examination at campus I UMM, Jl. Bandung, Malang.

Zainur’s dissertation was researched on the diversity of ethnic and political behavior toward the Pilkada (regional elections) in Kupang city. Promoted by Prof Dr Syamsul Arifin and co-promoted by Dr Muhadjir Effendy, Zainur explained his discovery about the electors’ tendency in selecting the Mayor of Kupang 2007-2012 periods which was influenced by ethnicity.

“This research also examined about whether Pilkada could encourage the social integration or not,” said Zainur. The result, although the politician often made use the ethnic as a manipulated issue for their necessity, the society was relatively had autonomous power to select.

Different with other regions, ethnic (SARA) issue that used to divide or collect vote had no effect in Kupang. “Even the big political party did not have a strong influence there,” continued Zainur. The society selected the Mayor was based on the candidates’ figures. They could give reward and punishment to the candidates without looking at their political party or their ethnic.

“In the regional autonomy, the society has their own way of thinking in giving reward and punishment to the politician. On the other hand, the political pressure and political appointment was not strong enough. The society has their own political reasoning. In the time, the society will have their own logical thinking about politic,” stated Zainur.

After graduated, to the journalist, Zainur valued that the implementation of Pilkada spent lots of cost because the selected candidate who will be the official tend to take the advantage of their position by corruption, etc. “There is still democracy side, however, it may not be able to increase the economic side,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, UMM Rector Muhadjir Effendy who leaded the examination stated that it was him the one who encouraged Zainur to select locus of research in Kupang. For him, the important thing on the qualitative research was characteristic distinctiveness not to find the similarity.

The examiners were consist of professors from UMM, Unair, and University of Muhammadiyah Kupang. As the head of examiners, Muhadjir evaluated that the examination was run smoothly. In addition, as a rector, he congratulated Zainur on his graduation as a second Doctor from UMM. (nov/uci/nas/t_rys)
