The Center for the Study of Islam and Philosophy (PSIF), University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held Islamic School Ramadan. Different with the last year which the theme was theology al-maun, the PSIF today was took the theme on modern tasawuf (Sufism way of life). The event was arranged with the colloquium of ulama (preacher) Muhammadiyah entire East java.

The head of PSIF Nurhakim said, the study on tasawuf was very relevant to be discussed in Ramadan. Ramadan month was our time to purify ourselves, to keep away ourselves from temporal greedy as well as the tasawuf theory. “The whole mankind expect to be fitrah (pure) after passing this Ramadan,” said Nurhakim.

The event was held on Saturday (7/28) and followed by various parties, especially ulama Muhammadiyah. The annual agenda of PSIF was intended to study seriously about religious phenomenon which happened in the modern society.

One of the speakers Prof Dr Fuad Effendy explained, the society life nowadays was lack of spiritual. For example, the violence cases were conducted by the urban that had sufficient education showed that the need of spirituality was very high.

 “On the contrary, in the Moslem itself, the spirituality just like a usual ritual without being appreciated,” stated the professor of Institute of Islamic Studies (STAIN) Kediri. Even, there are many Moslems began to be modern by leaving their Islamic value.

Moreover, Fuad continued that tasawuf did not invite us to leave earthly life, but to add the portion of spirituality in facing the world problems. In addition, tasawuf could clean every human’s heart. “Many people said that they are Moslem physically, however, they do not feel Islam as their spiritual value,” he criticized.

Nurhakim stated, for Muhammadiyah, the study about tasawuf was a form of asceticism which emphasized on the clear life. The asceticism gave an illustration about how a person should reach a life in the world proportionally. “After one performs one’s duty to Allah, he also demands to socialize in his environment and shares for one another,” said Nurhakim.
