American Corner (Amcor) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held National English Olympiad at UMM Theater Dome begun on Wednesday (7/4). The event that lasted for two days was followed by at least 66.000 applicants from 110 secondary schools of SMA/AMK/MA around Indonesia.
At first, the students had basic test in English non-speaking and non- listening. The students who passed the initial stage of the process, eventually followed the next competition held at UMM. Participants came from East Java, West Java, DKI Jakarta, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi.
There are about 250 participants who were decided to take the second and third test. "The students who go through different stages of the selection then selected into 30 people, and again selected the best 3 and champion of hope," said chief of committee Heru Wibowo.
In the second stage, the students were examined their competencies in four skills; reading, listening, grammar, and speaking. While in the third stage, there was treasure and hunt selection as well as students’ knowledge test about America.
Heru explained, there was some assessment criteria set by the jury, namely content, pronunciation, fluency, organizasiton, and delivery that intended for assessment of speaking.
The enthusiasm of participants could be seen from the way they present their capabilities. Those who pass the final stage did teleconferencing with UMM faculty from the United States through Skype. Appear once, they were fairly fluent English.
The Head of Amcor UMM Dr. Habib said this was the first competition held by his office. From this, he stated, a similar activity will be managed to introduce more about America to the public. High school students, he said, is the most ideal targets because they were looking for opportunities to study abroad.
“Hopefully, this contest made them inspired to study harder so that they will study abroad, especially in US,” said Habib.
The results were announced after the all stages passed. The best three were Janitra Icta Almer from SMAN 4 Malang, Alifandi Achmad Hardadien from SMA Bina Insani Bogor, and Angga Yuhindra Prasetia Nugraheni from SMA 1 Boyolangu Tulungagung.
"Each winner gets the development money from Amcor and U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya for Rp. 4.750.000 for the first winner, Rp 4.500.000 for the second winner, and Rp 4.250.000 for the third winner. In addition, the winner also received trophies and medals,” said Habib.
The new event was first carried out by the American Corner is indeed a success in attracting the enthusiasm of the students whose were interested in English. "With this activity, Amcor will be increasingly recognized by the general public. Besides, it also can support a wide range of government’s programs in the distribution of students’ competence," said Heru. (uci/nas/t_vik)
