Communication Science Department, FISIP of University of Muhammadiyah Malang must be proud; because waiting phase for the graduates to get a job was shorter. Three years ago, the waiting phase was 6 months, now it became shorter, about 4 months. “It means the Communication Department of UMM graduates are indeed can be accepted in work field or having a good entrepreneurship ability,” said the head of Communication Science department Nurudin, M.Si.

Nurudin believed, the successful alumni could not be separated from the good management in the department. So far, the relation among lecturers, alumni, and the students was well established. The success alumni gave information for their juniors, even they did some recruitments. Nurudin added, as a department which demanded professionalism, UMM Communication Science Department strengthened its students’ theoretical ability through up-to-date curriculum. “The conceptual mastery was a capital to be professional in the communication field. While, the practical ability was given by a lot of practices,” Nurudin added. At least, there were 13 practices including 6 production practices.

The production practices were approved by the alumni could give experiences to work independently. The students were demanded to be able to make journalistic papers through either printed, on air, or online. For the students who were interested in public relation, the students must be able to conduct events or become PR consultant for a company, while for the students who interested in studying audio visual communication or broadcast, they must be able to make a film, video clip or advertisement.

“I have been accepted in Trans TV after I graduated from UMM Communication. Since I learnt about film editor, I also worked as an editor. I shown all of my works when I studied in college to the Trans TV parties and they were interested with it,” said M Haka who graduated on last May 2012.

Nurudin added, in accordance with the vision, Communication department of UMM was expected to be a department that is excellent in the journalism field, PR, and Audio visual communication which were competitive both in the regional, national and global scale based on Islamic values. Therefore, the existence of the laboratory was a certainty.

“Our laboratory is the most complete one. There are laboratory for graphic design, journalism in printed, on air or online media, mini studio, campus TV, PR presentation, photography, and exhibition,” detailed Nurudin, about the communication laboratory which located on the ground floor of UMM Dome.

The interesting was, the communication students were very enthusiastic in organization. Many kinds of clubs were formed by students’ initiative.  Journalistic photography (Jufoc), for instance, had made a lot of national achievements. Now, there was also PR club, Journalistic club, Audio visual club, Media watch club, Indie film club, MC club, and many others. “They formed the clubs by themselves, while the department was only developing and supporting. Alhamdulillah, there were many achievement they have made,” continued Nurudin.

Furthermore, some works have been created from the club; such as achievements on the film documenter competition ‘Eagle Award’ Metro TV, PR competition, journalistic writing competition, and have published several books, the collection of students and lecturers writing.

“Hopefully, we will add the achievement again this year, because some clubs have succeeded to go to the final in the National Students Scientific Week (Pimnas) 2012,” hoped the chairman of the A accredited department. (Humas UMM/t_rys)
