Ir. Elfi Anis Saati, MP was born and raised up in a teacher family. It made her be familiar to read books and curious to know everything. For her, reading was a bridge to know anything broadly. “Through science, our self-value will be uplifted by Allah,” said Elfi, one of the outstanding lecturers at UMM and at Coordination of Private Higher Education VII (Kopertis VII) in 2010 when she was interviewed at Agricultural Technology Laboratory of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM).
Her feeling of always being challenged made the woman who came from Pasuruan found an innovation that is useful for the life. Her surrounded-nature brought her to have an inspiration to do a research. One of the researches related to the use of flower as an alternative food that is not thinkable before.
According to Elfi, the lecturer who productively doing research, the research that had been done was not separated from al-Qur’an guidance. She said, she wanted really keep up on scientific finding and religious teaching. Implementing al-Qur’an value into daily life, finally, she found new findings that were useful for life.
She acknowledged, her interest to do the research in 2000 was to study about “Pacar Air” plant. “In that time, I saw “Pacar Air” plant was thrown away and it was not used maximally,” she stated. Began from the experience, she, then, tried hard to find natural food coloring. Furthermore, she had produced eight works that had obtained a patent from Intellectual Property Right (HAKI).
Some of her works was about natural food coloring resulted from flower pigment; red rose, yellow “kana” flower, and “turi” flower. The more excellent was when her work stated as The Five Best Poster of Product Halal Excellent at World Halal Research Kuala Lumpur in 2011. Besides, she was one of reviewers from international journal reviewer.
Those researches had been recognized as antioxidant-rich supplement for heart and kidney protector. In her mission, Elfi, the mother of four children said, she would try hard to uncover many more secrets behind a variety of surrounded-local plant. So, it was not strange anymore if she consistently doing the research in every year. For her, the work was important to keep research stability and for consumer.
The work she had done was not separated from her family and her husband support. For Elfi, the alumnus of Institute of Bogor Agriculture, her husband gave big support in conducting the research. For this, she kept doing her best to show her seriousness in the field she concern.
The woman who now served as an auditor of halal food at LP POM MUI of East Java did believe, through knowledge, somebody’s work will be remembered. “Indonesian must have many thought to dig out its local culture, so, this country will not be looked down by others,” she declared. Elfi also hoped, she would find the other findings than food, but also the findings that could be applied in textile product. (uci/nas)
