Rector of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Muhadjir Effendy, stated that alumnus of UMM was a displaying window for this University. Every graduate would be seen by society as a reflection of education process which they have experienced in college. “Therefore, be smart in playing a role in society so that you can be the best graduate model,” adviced the rector in his speech to the 897 certified graduates today, Saturday (5/26).
He added that alumnus had to keep communicating with campus so that they could follow the progress in UMM. One of the progress which immediately realized was operational realization of Education Hospital of UMM and business unit gas filling station (SPBU). “In the near term, at latest in the end of this year those two units would have operating,” Rector said.
On the other hand, Vice chairman of Regional Leadership of Muhammadiyah East java Nurcholis Huda expected that the graduates ought to not complain easily. “The graduates have to be able to face challenges and be resistant with any problems,” Nurcholis stated.
The speech of Muhammadiyah Higher Education Board was delivered by chairman of National Institute of Research (LIPI) Prof. Dr Umar Anggara Jenie. He encouraged UMM become the center of civilization in Indonesia. “UMM must be the pioneer for academician and society. Therefore, UMM has to be smart enough in conducting education and research which is done simultaneously,” Umar said. One of the implementation indicators was the completion of the representative research facilities.
Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Prof. HA Malik Fadjar gave scientific oration in the event by theme ‘Worship and Optimism’. He quoted a research result in US which was stated that 56% respondents who worshiped actively were more optimist in facing their life. “It means that the role of religion very influencial for physical and spiritual needs,” He said.
Malik explained that religious matter involved the existence of oneness in God (tauhid) and faith (aqidah). In Islam, life was began from a belief and faith to Allah. The faith must be implemented into a good deed. “Faith and devotion automatically will encourage the good deed ,” stated the former minister of religious affairs.
Malik added, to strengthen the faith, worship activities must be done. Worship was a means to educate mankind to believe the truth. It was the truth that would be a guidance of the optimistic life; someone who believes the truth, he would be more optimistic. “Therefore, whatever the moment, in the joy and sorrow, please keep praying because it will help to establish our optimism,” Malik said. UMM graduates were expected to keep establish that optimism.
In line with Malik’s advice, the rector had also already adviced the graduates before. Rector said, UMM alumnus must have strong characteristics that was conducting daily prayer. Meanwhile, the graduates with other religions also were asked to be more diligent in praying based on their faith.
“If you have not completed the daily prayer yet, thus, after you graduate you should completed it. Make daily prayer as the character of a Moslem,” Rector’s adviced. (uci/nas/t_Rys)
