University students' life cannot be separated from relatively free environment. On this stage, adolescents start entering maturity. They choose their favorite university which is often located far outside their own town. Meanwhile, parents cannot monitor them all the time. Thus, students must be equipped with knowledge and strong religious lessons in order to avoid them from negative influences. Islamic mentoring is required to build student's personality especially for new comers or out-of-town students.
That is why University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) requires new students to participate a personality and leadership establishment program/Program Pembentukan Kepribadian dan Kepemimpinan (P2KK). It is intended to plant values of Islam, Muhammadiyah, personality and leadership. Besides, the program also stresses introduction on academic tradition as well as sociality of students.
This year, P2KK has entered its eighth year. For every cohort, there is always improvement on P2KK since the university wants to improve learning as well as systematic and suitable teaching method for students. Therefore, P2KK committee always holds annual workshop attended by lecturers and trainers. They contribute a lot to the improvement of the program in the future. Through the workshop, trainer candidates are equipped with new methods for P2KK.
This time, workshop was held on Saturday (4/14). The event was opened by Vice Rector III Dr. Diah Karmiati and attended by three resources: Drs. Joko Widodo. M.Si., Drs. Syamsurizal Yazid. MA. and Dra. Siti Sumiarti Fashikah, M.Si. Each of them delivered material to a number of trainers and trainer candidates. The topic of the material was closely related to the P2KK program activities. Strategy for student coaching and student developmental psychology became major focus in the annual workshop.
According to Joko Widodo, student's basic competences would be developed through the program. The competences include reading, writing and speaking. Students would become a competitive generation with strong insight. “Even though personality and leadership establishment cannot instantly be built,” said the former vice rector III.
The goal of the religious program is educating students without neglecting the final result. However, consideration is more on the process of the program itself. “Dealing with the developed process in terms of biological, cognitive and socio-emotional aspects, various learning techniques and materials must be adjusted to the every-year development,” said Joko.
Moreover, the event held in BAU hall was responded enthusiastically by the participants. They actively contributed giving their ideas in question-answer session. There were also trainers and trainer candidates who gave constructive suggestions for the program. Thus, the 68-participated event was able to answer various problems of P2KK in 2012. (uci/nas/t_alf)
