Tarjih and Tajdid Council Studies (MTT) of Regional Leadership of Muhammadiyah (PWM) of East Java took place warmly at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Saturday (1/29). No less than 200 participants consisting of tarjih scholars, the young leaders of Muhammadiyah, tarjih cadres, and academicians attended that one-day event entitled "Islamic Asceticism for the Ideals of the Nation".
MTT Chairman, Dr. Shamsuddin, MA, said that the values of asceticism can serve as guidelines for the cadres of Muhammadiyah. Manifestation of asceticism can be done in various side of life, including national leadership. A leader must demonstrate an attitude of asceticism to be the example for their people. "In this study, we will formulate asceticism to build exemplary leader," he said.
UMM Rector, Muhadjir Effendy, supported the council to conduct studies more frequently. As the movement of tajdid (renewal), tarjih is the spirit of Muhammadiyah. "Discussing tarjih is to revive the spirit of Muhammadiyah. So, do not just take care of the visible thing in Muhammadiyah. Tarjih is more substantial," said the Rector. Therefore, tarjih cannot produce fund resource. Then, ideally the Muhammadiyah Universites (PTM) organize it regularly.
According to Muhadjir, Muhammadiyah actually have quite a lot of scholars who can guide people through the tarjih studies. Unfortunately, kyai (a title for Muslim scholar, red.) among Muhammadiyah is less known though the opinion is always heard and followed. "We need to create Kyai products so that we can have tarjih and use it as our in having istinbath to the laws of Islam," he explained.
The event was opened by the Chairmain of PWM of East Java, Prof. Dr. Thohir Luth. He said that contemporary needs and mujdid are highly developed at this time. Thus, it requires updating in the real sense. This should begin with new fatwas to discuss contemporary issues started by Muhammadiyah movers.
"In the matter of asceticism, Muhammadiyah scholars should appear with sympathy and strength so that fatwas and contemporary asceticism are interpreted with valor to the worship of God," said Thohir.
In his paper, the Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, Prof. Dr. Syafiq A. Mugni, MA who was paneled with Dr. H. M. Saad Ibrahim, MA concerned on the dim asceticism among leaders. The dim asceticism provokes deviant behavior. He agreed that the asceticism can be interpreted as leaving forbidden things. "Al-Qushayri argues that asceticism leaves absolutely forbidden things and leaves permissible things on his own," he explained.
However, now days, Syafiq said that ascetic life has been transformed into tasawwuf and transformed into tarekat. "Initially, the tarekat is good, but eventually there are more eccentric people dealing with it. Therefore, considering the condition of the society, the formulation of asceticism concepts and behavior are necessary," he continued.
Interestingly, Syafiq rejected the notion that asceticism is poor. Conversely, becoming ascetic needs wealth. If they are poor, it will be called obliged asceticism. "The best thing is the rich and hardworking people, but simple in life and use his property for religion," concluded the former Chairman of the PWM of East Java.
To achieve the ascetic life, Saad Ibrahim had an interesting idea. Wealth should be seized in order to carry out the orders of zakat, infaq, and sodaqoh, as well as leaving heirs in quite good enough condition materially. "Do not be deceived by earthly life. Collect your wealth, but don’t let your soul be fettered by it," he said. (bib/nas/t_alf)
