| Vivin is proud to be the winner at the National Applied Science Olympiad 2011 |
Vivin Indah Sofiah, student of SMKN 1 Purwosari, Wednesday (11/9), visited the Biotechnology Development Center (Pusbang Biotek) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). This was her third visit to the lab of the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry (FPP) UMM. On her first visit, with her school friends, she joined biotech training. On her second visit, this intelligent student intensively followed intensive research internship for two weeks to prepare her participation in Applied Science Olympiad. Moreover, on her third visit, Vivin brought good news of becoming the second winner of the National Olympiad.
Vivin won the second place of the National Applied Science Olympiad 2011 for Vocational High School (OSTN IV - SMK) Students organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture in UGM Yogyakarta last October. She was the representative of SMK Negeri 1 Purwosari. During the preparation of material, Vivin joined theory and practice as well as conducted research on plant and animal morphology staining and surgery in Pusbang Biotek UMM.
Chief of Pusbang Biotek UMM, Dr. Ir. Saidatul Idiyah, MP, was proud of Vivin’s achievement. However, she also felt anxious for Vivin’s success since she was in her training. "Alhamdulillah, not only Vivin and teachers are happy, we are also very pleased and grateful for this victory," she said when welcoming Vivin and her two supervisor teachers, Tri Margaria, S. Pd and Prihatin Dwi Mahareny.
In addition, Vivin explained that in the Olympiad she had to not only show theory, but also practice her findings. For the assessment of theoretical mastery, Vivin must answer a number of problems of reasoning. As for practice, she did salt and bacterial staining, and morphology of animals and plants.
"UMM facilitated me to study at the Pusbang Biotek. Aside to my teachers, I was also trained by UMM lecturer," said student who are proficient in Korean and Japanese.
That was why Vivin immediately said yes when her teachers asking her visiting UMM again. She was invited to just express gratitude and proclaim victory. "Of course, I'm pleased and happy to bring the good name of the school and also Pusbang Biotek UMM which had specifically provided training to support this competition. Besides, this success is also my birthday gift," said the girl whose hobby is reading.
SMK N 1 Purwosari itself has three areas of concentration or expertise, namely machinery, informatics engineering, and engineering. Expertise in agriculture itself has often won competitions, among other the 1st winner of LKS Competition of Provincial Level in the field of Agricultural and Post Harvest THP. The school was also producing rosella products packaged in the form of syrup and rosella-flavored soft drinks in which the production process and packaging are also done in school.
"Hopefully, this kind of activity will be further supported in the form of material from various parties. Of course, we also thank the Pusbangbiotek UMM for the help so my student succeeded. We expect there will be an ongoing guidance from UMM in the future," hoped Tri Margaria, Vivin’s supervisor teacher.
Moreover, Secretary of Pusbang Biotek, Dr. Aris Winaya, M.Si, explained that Pusbang Biotek contributed providing SMP and SMA students to conduct research. Pusbang Biotek itself has three units, namely; First, study center which focuses on the scientific discussion about the development of biotech; Second, biotech lab that facilitates lecturers, students, and research groups from outside the UMM, and analysis services; Third, production unit which is devoted to the applied production which is still basic since it is still in research level.
"Here we also serve training and application while training for competition is still rare. There were twice in which one of them was for SMK N 1 Purwosari. However, there have been a lot of public trainings," said Aris who was teaching at FPP. (bib/nas/t_alf)
