Not only Undergraduate and Diploma Programs students who should participate study orientation before being the real UMM students, but also those who study at Post-Graduate Program UMM. However, different from Pesmaba for new students of undergraduate program, the orientation for Post-Graduate students lasted shorter but densely. It was held on one day only, Sunday (9/18).
The UMM Rector, Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, MAP, reminded students to be earnest although studying at Master Program. According to him, UMM is not a campus which is easy in giving diploma without proper process. It is not a matter of money. “If you come here to get diploma without any meaningful efforts, UMM does not suit you,” asserted Muhadjir.
Post-Graduate Program of UMM, said Muhadjir, is same with other programs which are oriented to the quality and prioritized to institutional strenghth. UMM name is the guarantee for better organization of study. UMM will not be reckless. Therefore, although there were a lot of working people who were interested in the program, UMM also received many fresh graduates. “I think the combination of practitioner and fresh graduates is beneficial since the knowledge will be complementer,” said the Rector when delivering his speech.
Meanwhile, Vice Director of UMM Post-Graduate Program, Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, expected students to finish study on time by managing time well especially in finishing thesis and dissertation. This year, UMM Post-Graduate Program received not less than 150 new studennts, among others were students from Singapore and Palestine.
The orientation also filled with material on Al-Islam dan Kemuhammadiyahan (AIK). Director of Post-Graduate Program, Latipun, PhD, said the material is a compensation for there is no AIK courses at S2 and S3. He hoped that although the material was delivered shortly, it was quite comprehensive and it gave complete orientation about Muhammadiyah to students from various backgrouds. Thus, he invited Chief of PP Muhammadiyah, Prof. Dr. Syafiq A Mughny to be resource person of the material.
Syafiq conveyed material entitled “Muhammadiyah sebagai Gerakan Pembahruan dan Peradaban”. In hios oration, Syafiq said that Muhammadiyah appreciates knowledge as a means of performing worship to God and aslo as a form of servicing human welfare. “Therefore, Muhammadiyah has built a lot of educational institutions. One of them is UMM,” he said.
Besides becoming civilization movement, Muhammadiyah is also known as enlightenment movement. The civilization built by Muhammadiyah is a civilization which is built together with the people for developed civilization. Therefore, the term used by Muhammadiyah is "Islam yang berkemajuan dan Islam pergerakan".
In addition, a students which is aslo a sister and Headmaster of SMA Katolik Kepanjen, Renata, admitted that she chose UMM for its quality. Besides, according to her, UMM is an open university for different relgion, ethnic, and race. “I'm well welcomed here although I'm not a Muslim. UMM also a developed and leading university,” she explained. She expected later she would be able to devote her knowledge to her students. (bib/nas/t_alf)
