The seminar on Micro, Small- and Medium- Sized Business (UMKM) of Economy Business Faculty (FEB) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) critized Indonesia government. On the topic of "UMKM as Leading Economic Sectors", the seminar was held at UMM Dome on Saturday (1/10). No fewer than 300 participants were from lecturers, students, and pratitioners from all over Indonesia.
Tulus T.H. Tambunan, one of the speakers from Center for Industry and SME Studies of Trisakti University, Jakarta indicated that UMKM was too much designed as movement. For instance, the movement to love batik. "This such kind of movement cannot drive a change, what we need is just a change," he stated.
Furthermore, Tulus said, though widely expected to be economic mainstay of Indonesia, UMKM did not have a big hope for the government. "Small- and Medium-Sized Business (UKM) themself must struggle to compete with big businessman," said Tulus clearly.
For its comparison, Tulus took the example of America, German, and Japan. Those three countries had strong UKM that were able to compete with big business. He assumed, UKM of Indonesia had more big potency to compete. It was clearly approved by APEC recently.
“UKM is very important for local economy. Besides, it provides meaningful job field to reduce the poverty. In addition, UKM use local technology that its raw material is plentiful," added Tulus.
UMM Rector, Muhadjir Effendy emphazised on three strategic strengths in determining economy and security stability of a nation. He quite regreted on the lack of civil society protection. For instance, today, society must struggle to compete with the existance of frachised supermarket in everywhere.
“In turn, this pattern will ofcourse threaten the group of UKM itself, such as small food stalls and traditional markets," said Muhadjir. He welcomed this seminar and hoped the real business formula for the society.
Dean of FEB UMM, Nazruddin Malik, confirmed the previous discussion. He then, would make FEB UMM had connection with interdiciplinary subjects due to non-economic factors were really crucial. The changing name from Faculty of Economy (FE) to be Faculty of Economy and Business (FEB), he thought, had its consequence.
Meanwhile, Deputy Head of Banking Supervision, BI Malang, Laksono Dwionggo, declared that bank was only intermediary that help UMKM. BI duty was protecting society's fund which was saved in it.
“Bank is only intermediary institution, for example, the society who has excess fund will be distributed to the one who lack of it. This will be proceed trough credit service for UMKM entrepreneur. Bank had its role in developing Indonesia UMKM," stated Laksono.
The Head of Cooperation Bureau and East Java UMKM, Endah Setyarini, said to the student of FEB in order to be businessman when they graduated. "Thus, you will be able to create the job field and help the growth of Indonesia economy," said Endah.
Seminar continued with the presentasion of call for paper participants. For about 22 articles from university over Indonesia were presented there. "Result of presentation will be documented for the input of strengthening the future of UMKM," stated Ihyaul Ulum, Chief of Committee. That seminar was a series of the 47th UMM FEB Diesnatalis.
