Keynote Speakers discussed on how to build an ideal religious teacher at Guest Lecture of the Faculty of Islamic Studies (FAI) UMM.

The Faculty of Islamic Studies (FAI) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held guest lectures on the theme "Building an Ideal Religious Teachers to Face Global Challenges", Saturday (7/5). The keynote speakers of this guest lecture were; the Director of Islamic Education in the Ministry of Islamic Republic Schools, DR. H. Tholkhah Imam, MA and the Head of Sub Directorate of Islamic Education of Junior High School in the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Drs. H. Mahmud. The agenda was wholly guided by the Dean of FAI, Drs. Sunarto, M.Ag.

The Participants of this guest lecture consisted of students receiving the scholarship program to improve undergraduate qualification (SI), scholarship awarded by the Ministry of Religion Affair. The recipients were Islamic teachers who studied in the Department of Tarbiyah S1 FAI UMM.

Sunarto hoped that his students would become the ideal teachers of religion, so they would gain insight and spirit of this guest lecture. "Ideal teacher was not only because of his academic title (S1) but also due to his wide insight and high competence," said Sunarto.

In addition, Imam Tholkhah exposed the reality of Islamic teachers were not ideal at this current time. According to him, the result of education provided by teachers of religion is far from the need, including the competencies that a teacher’s owned. There are three illustrations on teacher’s default; first, the majority of students graduated from elementary school were incapable of reading al-Qur’an, it happened to children living in big cities. Second, their ritual in worshiping God were not consistence yet-in term of doing a prayer, furthermore, most children could not even do it well. This case happened on the children who were graduated from junior high school. Third, children did not have good morals- in the presence of violence, fights between students, immoral behavior, and drug users. "This condition existed due to religious education given is not work effectively. In the aspect of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor had not run together," he said.

Teachers of religion should have their own proper way to teach. There were four competencies that must be owned by teachers, someone who became a role model to achieve as the ideal teacher of religion, those are; personal competence, social competence, and professional competence. While the pedagogical competence, teachers must master the methodology of education. "Besides, according to Imam, there are two other obligatory competencies that should be mastered namely leadership competencies and spiritual or work ethics competence as it brougt up the religious culture in the school," continued Imam.

Furthermore, Mahmud said, this scholarship program was intended to raise the dignity of a teacher. He explained about the role of teachers was very important both for the country and the community need, especially the figure of teachers tend to be listened and imitated by the other men. This scholarship program was expected to be combined by a professional attitude with a great support of an excellent IT along with growing the soul of teaching. "In addition, the most important of being a teacher was also being responsible for students' character building," said Mahmud. (bib/nas/ t_vik)
